Youth Services News What are you doing at your library?

We're closed. I'm in every day to obsessively read the news and library
updates. I'm updating our website as new info comes in. I'm also slowly
doing some cataloging of the bunch of stuff that came in right before we
shut our doors. And of course, working on orders for when we reopen,
depending on when that is.
My Assistant Director/Children's Librarian was scheduled for vacation before
this (yay! A week in AZ. home with the family all in the same house) and
will probably return next week to work on programming, find resources for
home parents and start planning for summer. The very part time aide is
cleaning DVDs to an inch of their lives and other projects.
I have a few volunteers who are sufficiently healthy and stir-crazy and I've
been letting a couple in at a time to work on fixing cataloging problems,
cleaning items (the Legos probably haven't been this clean forever) and
other things as they are willing.
I'm also starting work on our 2018 GO Bond as the 2016 might have finally
been released by the County.
AND I'm wondering if this will be the thing that pushes us over into having
digital materials in our collection. Given the age of our population, our
proximity to Santa Fe and our limited collection budget combined with the
continues popularity of our print collection, it hasn't been an issue. But
I'm wondering if this will be the thing that kills print. Or deals it a
substantial wound. What are the average costs for libraries out there with
e-collections? I haven't reviewed in a while and am afraid to look.
Thank you

Lots of cleaning, putting together new learning kits, and got a shipment of
new books to catalog and process. Looking forward to sharing those when we
reopen! I also have a daily blog with cross-curricular activities that I
have been working on, sharing that and other links to out Facebook page.
Once I get me desk cleared off I'm going to re-pot a bunch of library
plants. Lots of little projects we just never have the time for! Other staff
are rearranging collections and re-labeling books that had those old
hand-cut sticky spine labels.

I have just cleared out the junk from our craft closet and re-arranged it so
we can see everything we have. Yay! I also put out our newsletter, and
plan to do some weeding. And I'm going to get out our kids' jigsaw puzzles
and see which ones are missing pieces. Maybe sew up some tears in the
stuffed animals, too.

So, we are not open to the public, but our library staff is still working (a
blessing to have a job to go to, a paycheck, and some social contact, even
though it is limited).
Here in youth services, I am shifting books around and re-doing some
sections so they make more sense. Also taking the time (finally) to do a
good, thorough weeding in non-fiction.
I'm also rethinking our new book display, which is currently an octagonal
thing that doesn't fit the space well. My director wants to use that
awkwardly-shaped display elsewhere in the library, and I have the go-ahead
to choose something that will show off our books better.
I'm also shopping online for some better shelves for our children's graphic
novels. Currently they are housed in some magazine displays, face-out.
That's nice to show the covers, but each shelf is only a few inches deep,
which means that everything is kind of stuffed in and looks crowded. I could
have a larger collection with shelves that are meant to hold graphic novels
instead of magazines!
I'm also monitoring our Facebook page and adding useful links (thanks for
the ones you shared, Deanne!). Did you all know that Audible is offering
free children's audiobooks right now, by the way?
I am curious to know if anyone else working, and if so, what projects you
are undertaking?
