COMMITTEE HEARINGS
Senate Bill 170, the $30 million Rural Libraries Endowment Fund appropriation, was given a unanimous "do pass" recommendation by the Senate Indian, Rural and Cultural Affairs Committee.

Senator Ortiz y Pino describes the bill beginning at 9:42:15. Shel Neymark provides additional information about the Rural Libraries Endowment and its current and potential impact at 9:44:50. They noted that the existence of the endowment has encouraged several new rural libraries to emerge. Senator Ortiz y Pino noted the LFC did not recommend any funding, but that the Governor asked for $10 million in funding. Public comment begins at 9:48:30. Committee discussion begins at 9:51:00. Senator Ivey-Soto noted the correlation between having books in the home and student academic achievement. At 9:54:00 there is a motion for a "do pass" recommendation, which passes on a 5-0 vote. The bill now goes to the Senate Finance Committee.
TRIBAL EDUCATION TRUST FUND
HB 134 by Rep. Derrick Lente was heard on Friday the 26th in the House Education Committee. The bill was rolled over until tomorrow so that several amendments could be drafted. The bill will be third on the Committee's agenda. Tribal library activities could potentially be funded by such a trust fund.

LIBRARY G.O. BOND BILL
We are still awaiting the introduction of what is likely to be titled the General Obligation Bond Projects bill. All bills must be introduced by the close of business on Wednesday, January 31st. We expect that the Library G.O. Bond will be funded at $19 million.
