Yá’á’t’ééh AILA Friends & Colleagues,
I am reaching out to invite you all to my Rare Book School-Cultural Heritage Community Symposia Events, the Diné College Kinyaa’áanii Library Special Collections Series, which will take place next month, in February both virtually and in-person at the Diné College Tsaile Campus Library Gorman Room. There are three speaking events scheduled on the 7th, the 14th, and the 21st at 2pm MST and all the resources featured will be on display for that entire month.
Because we’re so remote, I wanted to make this series accessible online, so all the speaking events will be livestreamed via Facebook Live through Diné College’s Facebook Page.
This is the culmination of my fellowship with Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Diversity, Inclusion & Cultural Heritage (CHF) at Rare Book School. I'm so glad to shine a spotlight on Tribal Colleges & University library collections and what they mean for the research and scholarship coming out of our institutions!
Hope to see you there!
Ahxéhee’,
Rhiannon
Diné College Kinyaa’áanii Library Special Collections Series
Taking Place February 7, 14, 21 in the Kinyaa’áanii Library Gorman Room and Facebook Livestream at https://www.facebook.com/DineCollege/
The Diné College Kinyaa’áanii Library Special Collections Series is a public-facing symposium series highlighting key special collections resources at the library that define the educational and self-deterministic legacy of the college. Tribal history, language, and culture often end up in repositories outside of the communities from which they came. Many researchers and scholars look to large institutions such as state archives and university special collections for this knowledge. This series brings scholars, leaders, and instructors that helped build Diné College and the collections that document this history of self-determination in American Indian higher education to talk about these collections and what they have meant in empowering Diné people and advancing intellectual history and production on tribal homelands.
All collection/resource items featured will be on display and accessible for viewing/listening in the Gorman Room (in-person only)
Additional info on speakers, resources, item descriptions, and event recordings will be available on the series’ website: https://lib.dinecollege.edu/Special-Collections-Series Site will be updated and additional info added in the coming weeks.
This event is co-sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Diversity, Inclusion & Cultural Heritage (CHF) at Rare Book School, on behalf of CHF fellow, Rhiannon Sorrell.
EVENTS:
Diné Bich’iyáán: Navajo Food Research and Scholarship at Diné College Libraries
A land-grant institution, Diné College has a strong foundation in agricultural and food sovereignty research, scholarship, and community outreach. Join us in this session, where Dr. Christine Ami will discuss the research of her upcoming book on traditional sheep butchering, and the library’s special collection resources she incorporated in her studies and research.
The History and Legacy of the Navajo Community College Press
The Navajo Community College Press was the publishing division of the Navajo Community College (now Diné College), the first tribally chartered and controlled college in the United States. The press published over 40 books, most on Navajo studies, most overseen by the late Ruth Roessel, the founder of Native American Studies at the Rough Rock Demonstration School. Although the press went dormant in the 1990s, and the books are now out of print, the press’s publications remain an invaluable resource to the college and speak to the college’s mission of self-determination by prioritizing Native voices to Native audiences. Join us in this session as Dr. Michael Lerma and Dr. Charles “Monty” Roessel provide a historical overview of the press, its significance, and the current plans for its revival.
The Diné Educational Philosophy Lecture Recordings & Curriculum
The Diné Education Philosophy Lecture recordings are the backbone of a faculty professional development curriculum at Diné College. Created over a span of 6 years from 2009 to 2015, the recorded lectures are delivered by faculty, Traditional Knowledge holders, and Hataałii (medicine men/women) in the community (many hold all three of these roles) in both English and Diné Bizaad on topics and concepts integral to the educational philosophy of the Diné people, such as Kinship, ceremonies, oral histories/creation stories, Cornstalk Philosophy, and more. Join us, as Dr. Avery Denny, a key contributor to the collection, discusses the role of Diné Educational Philosophy to the continued success of the college and its importance in the curriculum.
