What’s happening this month?
On Thursday, November 30, 2023 the brown bag series will feature Dr. Berlinda Begay (Diné). Berlinda Begay is a citizen of the Navajo Nation. She lives in a small rural community called Red Mesa, AZ but was raised in another small rural community called Rock Point, AZ. Berlinda has been in Indian Education for over 27 years, but her passion is working with Navajo language and culture. Today, Berlinda's work is focused on Indigenous language revitalization, reclamation, preservation, and advocacy for cultural identity in many facets such as culturally responsive teaching. Navajo is her first language. Her undergraduate and graduate degrees were specific to Navajo bilingual bicultural education, and administration specific to working for Navajo children, and Navajo people. Berlinda credits her humble upbringing as the inspiration for what she does today in Navajo language and culture; “I do what I do because of my own children, my Navajo children, and for the unborn. My upbringing has a lot to do with what inspires me to do this work. I believe that it is my purpose in my life to do the work that I do.”
What will the Brown Bag entail?
Abstract of presentation: In an effort to revitalize and prioritize the teaching and learning of the Navajo language, the dissertation research describes how to live life that has been handed down orally through Navajo Creation Stories and other sacred teachings. This dissertation research used Indigenous research methodologies that combine autoethnography and the decolonizing goals of the tribal critical race theory, the oral stories and teachings were used as a historical context for their importance. The dissertation research shares sacred stories and personal experience to explain how and why the Navajo language conveys the important teaching of our ancestors in ways that are difficult if not impossible in English.
