[Nmsalsa] FW: [OCLC-CAT] Looking for info on OCLC gateway to download records from Connexion

Hi all,
The original message about using the OCLC gateway to enter records directly into a local system, has me wondering if that will be allowed in the new SALSA database.

What say you?

I’ve used the gateway to export to Alma and Millennium systems, and have also used the method of exporting to a file with Voyager systems. I prefer the instant gratification of the gateway export. We do have a login to our local system configured in the Connexion client, but we don’t have dedicated workstations. With Alma, the gateway export uses an OCLC integration profile, which is separate from the import profiles used with files of records. A lot depends on the local system you are using, so it would probably be good to ask user groups for your local system.

I'm not sure how to understand needing a dedicated workstation and login. We're a smaller outfit than you (there are 3-5 of us), and we all use the same profile settings (login, password, download settings) at various machines. Everyone downloads (using the Gateway) what they need, and it's instantly available.
We use Connexion Client, rather than the Browser-based version, so any machine has to have the Client software on it, but installing that is not hard to do (minutes, not hours), and you only do it once. (Also free.) If that's what they mean by "dedicated workstation", then I would definitely go for it.

Hello,
My network is investigating using the OCLC gateway to download records from Connexion directly into our database. This is suggested as more efficient than downloading to a file we upload daily. I'm hoping that someone doing or has done this can offer some advice on this process. Do you like it?

We are concerned how this will affect workflow as we are told we need a dedicated workstation and login for this. We download OCLC records for member libraries but don't do centralized cataloging. We average about 100 records a day while also doing database maintenance and support for the 150+ libraries in our network. We use Z39.50 for overlays and do about 1200 a month.

We are also told the records go into a queue and we can use the same profiles our loader uses for matching and importing/overlaying. I guess I don't understand the queue part as it was presented as direct import.

Thanks,
Janet
