Hi!
We are concluding our current season with “The Standby Lear” written by New
York Playwright John Lowell. The entertaining and engaging play is directed
by NSTC’s Artistic Director, Ceil Herman. The play opens on Friday, May 6
and runs through Sunday, May 22 at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Main
Street in Las Cruces. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m.,
Sunday matinees on May 15 and May 22 at 2:30 p.m. and a Thursday evening
performance at 7:00 p.m..
Augie Davidson is played by Ed Montes, was recently seen in No Strings
Theatre Company’s courtyard production of “Animal Tales.” Augie is an actor
who has only been given small parts recently, and currently is employed as
a standby for the role of King Lear. When the play opens, he is carefully
rehearsing his lines, though he has had no opportunity to take over for the
current actor. The skillfully written play combines rehearsing Shakespeare
with the reality of what happens when the understudy is actually given the
big chance to take over the role.
Nancy Clein Tafoya, recently seen in NSTC's "Radium Girls" and "Animal
Tales," plays Anna Davidson, Augie’s wife, also an actor, who has stopped
taking major roles in the theatre and assumed the role of encouraging and
supportive spouse. She has come to the theatre as the play begins, to bring
his lunch to him, as he has forgotten to come home for lunch.
Light and Scenic Design for “The Standby Lear” is by Peter Herman, Costume
Design by Autumn Gieb, and Light and Sound Board operators are Bekah
Taulbee, Casi Galban, and Karen Buerdsell.
Tickets are $15.00 regular admission, $12.00 for students and seniors over
65, and all seats on Thursday are $10.00. Reservations for “The Standby
Lear” can be made by calling the Black Box Theatre at (575) 523-1223 or
online at the No Strings Website (www.no-strings.org).
See you at the theatre!
