<p><font face="Times New Roman, Times, serif">Free books have always
been a popular prize along the way but I only could do that at a
larger library. Here we have a basket of toys/pencils/lip
balm/etc for the weekly check-ins and readers get a raffle
ticket for each book read (or 5 read-to-me books). For the end
of summer we do the raffle but have quite a few prizes for all
ages from gift cards or museum memberships to t-shirts, books,
games, outdoor gear, etc... At the end we invite up the kids who
didn't get a prize to pick something and also have a book cart
of free books for all ages so no one leaves empty handed. The
books are from donations - I save up the brand new books
throughout the year. And we sometimes buy kid's books from
Scholastic Literacy Partners. <br>

<div dir="ltr">Hello all,
<div>This is my first summer reading, and I am trying to figure
out what to do for incentives. Families are used to getting
little prizes each week, but I know that doesn't promote
intrinsic motivation or a passion for reading or learning in
kids. I'm considering moving to weekly take-home craft and
science kits along with free books at the beginning, middle,
and end of summer for prizes. </div>

<div>What works for your summer reading incentives? Has anyone
moved from cheap prizes to something else with success? I only
have a couple weeks to submit my budget to Friends, so I'm
trying to get all my prizes planned now. </div>
