Youth Services News Smokey Bear Reading Challenge Update

Hello!

The New Mexico State Library is happy to be a state partner for the 2024 Smokey Bear Reading Challenge, created by the US Forest Service, in honor of Smokey Bear's 80th birthday.  Libraries can incorporate the Smokey Bear challenge within their Summer Reading Program or have it as a separate program.


Each public library will receive incentive items for your use during the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge:

  *   Roll of 500 Smokey Stickers
  *   Pack of 50 Smokey Cards
  *   Smokey Ink Stamp
  *   Pack of Smokey Bear Story books (English/Spanish)
  *   Translation of Smokey Bear Story into Diné

You will also receive an NMSL Adventure Pack to use as desired in your library – as a giveaway, prize, raffle gift, etc.  These packs go along with the Adventure Begins at Your Library Summer Reading theme, and the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge.  Packs will include a NMSL drawstring sportpack, frisbee, journal, pencil, library card holder, DOT map of New Mexico, and a magnifying glass, Smokey Bear bandana, postcard, and more from the US Forest Service.

Delivery of the packs will begin the week of February 26.  Some will be delivered via our delivery van or during already scheduled staff visits, and some via regular mail.  Please allow a few weeks for all to be delivered.

We appreciate the support of the Southwestern Office of the US Forest Service and the NM Department of Transportation for supplying materials for inclusion in the Adventure Packs.
