Hello!

Big thanks to everyone who answered the survey about Youth Services meeting times.  Monday and Friday were the top vote-getters for days of the week - and there was a pretty even split between requests for morning and afternoon meetings. Lunch time was the least popular time.

So, let's try a Friday morning and Monday afternoon and see if more folks are able to join for a statewide conversation.
For September the meetings will be Friday, September 15 @10am, and Monday, September 18 @ 1pm.  Both meeting times will be talking about book clubs. Full details will be in the September newsletter, which will be out later today, and in reminders to the listserv.

And, Congratulations to Nichole Byres from Albuquerque Bernalillo County Public Library who will be getting her Love My Library hat in the mail!

7000 BC is partnering with the City of Albuquerque to present Librarians Rule!, a FREE Comic and Graphic Novel Professional Development for Librarians.  This was created for Albuquerque but librarians from other library systems in New Mexico are also welcome to attend.  These sessions will be recorded and posted. All sessions are virtual, and registration is through the Eventbrite links below.  Please pass this on to any other interested librarians in the state that might be interested.

 

There are two courses:

Basic: Have an interest in comics but don't know where to start? Non-profit arts organization 7000 BC has been bringing fast-paced, hands-on comic book workshops to libraries around New Mexico for nearly two decades. We'll lead you through the basics of how the comics medium functions while also stepping back to reveal why it's so powerful and how how you can successfully lead a comics workshop at your library.

Advanced: What draws readers to comics and graphic novels?  How do comics relate more broadly to visual literacy?  We'll take a deeper dive into the comics medium, examine how understanding comics can improve your patrons' life skills, and look at the choices you can make to build a more successful comics collection.

This PD is a part of our celebrations leading to the 20th Annual 24 Hour Comics Day.  These also include workshops, displays, and a live virtual interview with Jeff Smith.  (He's recovering from a cardiac arrest and may be postponing.  If so, we'll interview local comics phenom Stephen McCranie.) Yesterday at the CSLP Annual Meeting they announced the results of the vote for 2026 Slogan and 2027 Theme.

And the winner is...

2026 Slogan -  "Unearth a Story" (Theme: Dinosaurs)
2027 Theme -  Mystery/Detective/Suspense

AND CSLP is running a contest for program ideas for the 2025 Manual - Color our World (the manual committees are already beginning work on those manuals!)

Hello Youth Services Staff,

A few quick mid-week reminders:


  *   TODAY (Wednesday) @noon is the Building a Teen Book Club webinar from Harperstacks. We had some great discussions about book clubs at our September YS meetings - lots of folks interested in starting or expanding their programs.

  *   Join a CSLP Committee!  Deadline to apply for a national CSLP Committee is next Tuesday, October 2.  This is a great way to be a part of planning and promoting the CSLP summer reading program.   *   Performers and Programs Database - Only a few more days to submit your recommended performers and program providers to share out with libraries statewide.
