NOVEMBER 2023 NEWSLETTER WHAT A MONTH! October was very busy at the New Mexico State Library and topped off by a great New Mexico Library Association c myemail.constantcontact.com You can always find this month's newsletter, as well as previous versions, on the Youth Services page of the NMSL website. It was great to see so many folks in-person at last week's NMLA conference in Albuquerque. As always, I was reminded of the great programming libraries are providing all across New Mexico. The author panel on Friday was another highlight, and I was excited to get a copy of Laurel Goodluck's new book Rock Your Mocs. If you let me know (first) how you would use that book in your library programming for Native American Heritage Month - I'll send it to you! Don't forget to get a copy of the November Early Literacy Calendar - here on Niche Academy Have a great weekend! Please see below regarding volunteer opportunities for CSLP committees related to the manual. This is a great way to contribute to the national summer reading program. ~Kelly Hello, State Reps! This is an extra call for volunteers for two of CSLP's manual committees. We're well underway on generating content for our 2025 Manual: Color Our World! 1. The Spanish Manual Committee compiles Spanish-language content (all ages) for the manual, and committee work runs for approximately 2 months, from now until January 2024. Interested in the Spanish Manual Committee? Email Deborah Kinirons (Chair) at dkinirons at uniondalelibrary.org 2. Review Committee members review and comment on the draft manual (from mid-January to mid-February, 2024). We need as many eyes as possible, no matter your specialty, on the first draft! Interested in the Review Committee? Email Alyssa Graybeal, alyssa.graybeal at cslpreads.org As you know, CSLP runs on volunteers. We always welcome new people who want to contribute to the fun! We'd appreciate it so much if you could share this with your lists or anyone else you know who might be interested. After all, you work in a building where you are literally surrounded by some of the best stories in the world. So why is it so hard for libraries to tell their own stories? It's because we often get stuck at the very first step in the process: finding the right stories to share with our community. The quest for library stories that have emotion and a compelling story arch perfect for library advocacy is more difficult than it sounds. But, in this session, you'll learn how a good story becomes good marketing, as well as practical tips to find stories that you can use for advocacy and promotion. 3:30- 4:30 pm (1:30-2:30pm MST) Taking the Adventures Outdoors: Programming and Partnerships Join us for a discussion on the various ideas, resources, and partners that can support your library in outdoor programming. We?ll share program ideas for libraries of different sizes, staff availability, and budget, along with information about a great resource called 1,000 Hours Outdoors that can help tie together your outdoor programming. We will also be joined by the National Forest Service to learn more about the upcoming 80th birthday of Smokey Bear and ways to incorporate that into your summer programming. Presenters: ? Annie Spence, Outreach Librarian, Grosse Pointe Public Library ? Melissa Rizer, Youth Services Librarian, Grosse Pointe Public Library ? Susan Cox, National Forest Service, Conservation Education Coordinator, Region 9 - USDA Forest Service ? Jessica Nickelsen, Director, Natural Inquirer, FIND Outdoors ?
