Collection Management Learning Opportunities
WebJunction facilitates learning on topics both new to library work as well as those perennial facets of librarianship that ebb and flow over the years. Managing library collections—whether acquiring new materials to meet changing community needs, weeding out old books to make room for the new, or facing a book challenge—is one of those perennial library topics that has been a recent focus.
Featured below, you’ll find two popular webinar recordings that can help you and your team tackle the new twists and turns to collection management. There is also a great opportunity for libraries to apply to participate in a new program to become a hub for making outdoor games and interactive stories—using your local history, community voices, and neighborhood landmarks.

Across the United States, there are increased reports of book challenges from community members, which have led to very public and heated discussions. As public library leaders and staff consider how to prepare for similar local challenges, being proactive about developing and sharing policies and procedures can help to create clarity and establish expectations around responses to book challenges. This preparation may also include engaging stakeholders, partners, and supporters around the value and essential need for intellectual freedom in the library. View this webinar recording with panelists who are working through these issues in their communities, to learn about the resources they have found useful, and their suggestions for getting started.

Open call from our friends at American University and the DC Public Library! More than 20 libraries will be selected starting August 15 to "engage beyond our walls." Each library will receive modest funding, live workshops with our game designers, and support to launch public events. There is a growing need for digital media in public space and “low-tech” access for everyone. By joining this program, libraries can become a hub for making neighborhood games and outdoor stories—from escape rooms with local history to audio tours with resident voices. The authoring tool is called Hive Mechanic, and it does not require any programming experience to use; it was made by the Game Center at American University in collaboration with the DC Public Library. Urban, tribal and rural libraries are all welcome. Mental Health and Suicide Prevention for Veterans, Service Members, Families and Communities
2:00 PM–3:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time
Suicide is a national public health issue that impacts people from all walks of life, regardless of whether or not they have served in the military. However, the suicide rate among Veterans was 52% higher than non-Veteran adults in the U.S. in 2019, and Veteran suicides represent approximately 22% of all suicide deaths in the U.S. Libraries are well positioned to provide information and referral services to connect Veterans and members of military communities with Veterans Health Administration programs and initiatives that address risks and protective factors for suicidal behaviors. Join us for this webinar with presenters from the Veterans Health Administration Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, who will provide an introduction to military culture and share how libraries can help raise awareness of the resources available to Veterans, their families, and other members of military communities.
Presented by: Lillie Mells, Education & Training Program Coordinator; Cassie Dubicki, Health Systems Specialist; and Shurhonda Love, Community Relations Specialist, Partnerships & Community Relations, all from the Office of Mental Health Suicide Prevention, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Emerging Tech Trends for 2022 and Beyond
3:00 PM–4:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time
Technology has changed the face of libraries and is continuing to change how we work and how we deliver services to customers. In fact, the past few years have pushed us, and in some cases made us scramble, to discover and experiment with new technologies and tools, to train our staff and community, and to look for new ways of doing our core activities. This presentation introduces emerging technology trends and shows how those trends are reshaping library services. Examples are provided of how to incorporate and adapt these evolving trends into libraries. Learn what trends to look for, find out the difference between a technology trend and a fad, and get ideas on how your library can respond to technologies as they emerge.

Civil Legal Issues of Natural Disasters: Libraries Can Help
3:00 PM–4:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time
Natural disasters strike everywhere. In their wake, communities are left reeling and many people turn to their libraries for support and information. Your library may have plans to secure its facilities and collections in order to keep the doors open, but are you prepared to support patrons’ civil legal issues that arise? A host of urgent needs emerge around FEMA applications, landlord-tenant disputes, property issues, required documentation, and more. Libraries can play a crucial role connecting people with civil legal issues to resources and information that can help. Join this webinar to learn how to apply reference skills to support community members through this civil legal turmoil and guide them toward positive outcomes.
