The 2022 Legislative session starts on Tuesday, January 18th. This will be a 30-day session, ending at noon on February 17th. February 2nd is the last day for new bills to be introduced. Legislation may be pre-filed beginning January 3, 2022. NMLA Legislative Day will be Friday, January 28. Please ask library supporters, including your local board members and friends groups to save the date. It is highly likely that this will be a session with very limited ceremonial/recognition time. Capitol visitors will be required to show proof of vaccination; people with verified exemptions will need to show proof of a negative COVID test. Masks will be required except for eating or drinking. The first floor chambers and offices are limited to legislators and staff. ************** COMMITTEE HEARING: DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS BUDGET We need librarians and library supporters to attend virtually (probably) the House Appropriations and Finance Committee session during the afternoon of Friday January 14th to show support for library programs of the New Mexico State Library within the Department of Cultural Affairs budget. Our presence supports the inclusion of robust funding for the 2022 Library General Obligation Bond Issue and for State Library programs for public, rural and tribal libraries. We'll send more information as we receive it. We were forwarded a copy of the following communication from the DCA Legislative Liaison Michaelene M. Kyrala. "Subject: DCA Budget Hearing in House Appropriations and Finance Hello All, I hope you had a joyous start to 2022! DCA's budget hearing before the House Appropriations and Finance Committee is scheduled for this Friday January 14th. The committee will reconvene from lunch at 1:30pm and we are 2nd on the agenda after the Department of Finance and Administration. You can watch the live webcast at https://sg001-harmony.sliq.net/00293/harmony (the option of "House Appropriations and Finance Committee" will be live when the committee reconvenes). Please note that participating virtually is appreciated. With the uptick in Covid cases we are unsure whether the hearing will be in person or virtual. Thank you for your continued support and advocacy of Cultural Affairs! I look forward to partnering with you during the upcoming session. Warm Regards, Michaelene Michaelene M. I am trying to determine if books by Native writers (my area of research) are being challenged in NM libraries. If you're comfortable sharing challenges, can you write to me directly? I'm also wondering if *An Indigenous Peoples' History of the US for Young People *has been challenged. It appears on the list that Krause, a state rep in TX, compiled, and I wondered if other locations outside of TX might be receiving challenges to books on that list. I did a short blog post last year when the Central York challenges were in the news. That challenged list included several books by Native writers. https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/2021/09/books-by-native-writers-are-on-list-of.html Thanks in advance!
