Maybe it was a coworker who covered the desk while you put the finishing touches on a book display, or a business that generously donated this year's grand prize. Friends Groups, Board Members, Volunteers, the list goes on and on. And let's not forget the participants! The following templates have been created to help spread the gratitude. The CSLP's Child and Community Well-Being committee encourages library involvement in activities that support wellness, from summer and afterschool meals, to well-being programming, to support for basic needs, all to help children, teens, and communities stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out. Resources include the Libraries and Summer Food page on the CSLP website; a Facebook group for news, support, and resource-sharing; and an ongoing series of stories showcasing the experiences of libraries around the country. Goat Yoga with the Grafton-Midview Public Library By Kari Mariner, Youth Services Librarian, Grafton-Midview Public Library, OH There was a moment during goat yoga when the instructor, Alyssa Welch, asked everyone to pause in gratitude for the gorgeous weather and the baby goats. Considering that the sun was just starting to set, a goat had nestled his way into a teen's arms, and goat yoga was the first in-person program to be offered by the Grafton-Midview Public Library since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, it was a perfect moment. [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/_compresseds/ac8c5cb8-b90e-03f1-8ba9-4903a6ba0152.jpg] What exactly is goat yoga? The idea is pretty simple: A yoga instructor leads a class of humans while adorable baby goats nibble on clothing and hair, nuzzle faces, and climb on participants during downward dog and other opportune poses. The idea originated with entrepreneur Lainey Morse in 2016 after she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. You don't have to be a seasoned yogi to participate. It's not just for adults. There will probably be goat poop at some point, but participants will be more entertained by it than you could imagine. Goat yoga is about the experience: combining animals, nature, and yoga to lift the spirits. The Grafton-Midview Public Library's goat yoga program took place on Friday, June 4, 2021 at the Old Grafton School in Grafton, Ohio. The property, an elementary school dating back to the 1930s, is currently transforming into a space for artist studios and community theater. Goat yogis had the chance to donate to the school's new community garden during the program. Welch from Grounded Yoga and Wellness in Grafton led a group of twenty adults and teens through an hour of simple yoga poses. She particularly focused on breathing and balancing the solar plexus chakra. [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/_compresseds/8e693a96-0f21-6cb3-70d1-94a7927b3a11.jpg] Gaga for Goats, located in Cuyahoga Falls, brought 9 baby Nigerian Dwarf goats ranging in ages from 7 to 9 weeks to roam amongst the participants; goat yoga was the first outing for most of the babies. The program filled within days of registration opening, including the wait list, and the comments during the program were overwhelmingly positive. If you're interested in offering a new twist on yoga, you aren't just limited to goats. Cat yoga and pig yoga are two popular alternatives. Consider changing the location of your yoga class from the library to a nearby park or other outdoor community space. Be creative and have fun imagining all the ways you can raise mental and physical health in your community. Parent/Caregiver Survey * These surveys are for the parents and caregivers to complete and are about the impact the summer reading program has had on their child(ren). * The information gathered with these surveys is incredibly important for the report we give to the IMLS, which funds the program. * This survey voluntary, but highly recommended. * Please note, if a parent/caregiver chose to complete a paper survey, you must then enter their answers into the online form. ? Parent English Survey: https://forms.gle/NSYukPWV144z6g5B6 ? Parent Spanish Survey: https://forms.gle/PuNGg3RHNKGw8Lr17 Librarian Survey * This is the survey YOU complete using the link below at the end of your summer reading program to be eligible for a voucher for SRP 22. * If you do not conduct a summer reading program this year, that?s okay, but YOU still must complete the Librarian Survey to be eligible for a voucher for SRP 22! * Simply answer the question, Did your library conduct some sort of Summer Reading Program this year? with No. * Answering No then takes you to only a couple of questions to answer, and this will suffice for being eligible for a voucher for SRP 22. * Please note, if YOU do not complete the Librarian Survey, you will not receive a voucher for SRP 22. ? Thank you. SRP 2021 Librarian and Parent/Caregiver Surveys Today is the deadline for submitting the Librarian Survey and entering any paper Parent Surveys Parent/Caregiver Survey * If a parent/caregiver chose to complete a paper survey, you must enter their answers into the online form. ? Parent English Survey: https://forms.gle/NSYukPWV144z6g5B6 ? Parent Spanish Survey: https://forms.gle/PuNGg3RHNKGw8Lr17 Librarian Survey * This is the survey YOU complete using the link below to be eligible for a voucher for SRP 22. * If you did NOT conduct a summer reading program this year, that?s okay, but YOU still must complete the Librarian Survey to be eligible for a voucher for SRP 22! * Simply answer the question, Did your library conduct some sort of Summer Reading Program this year? with No. * Answering No then takes you to only a couple of questions to answer, and this will suffice for being eligible for a voucher for SRP 22. * Please note, if you do not complete the Librarian Survey, your library will not receive a voucher for SRP 22. ? Librarian Survey: https://forms.gle/VZbM9twAdsWU3RM78 Consider joining a CSLP committee! * Sign-ups for 2022 are open until October 8, 2021. * While the duties vary, committee obligations generally run for one calendar year. * All committee work is done virtually; either through email, or through phone or online meetings. * Attending the CSLP Annual Meeting is not required. * For more information, please visit: https://www.cslpreads.org/join-a-cslp-committee/ Theme & Slogan Listening Sessions and Membership Input Session Theme & Slogan Listening Sessions * Have you ever wondered how the summer reading themes and slogans are selected each year? We plan several years in advance, to allow time to contract with quality illustrators. We are currently working on the 2024 slogan and the 2025 themes. (Want a little CSLP Theme/Slogan history? ? 30 Years of CSLP History) * Campaign for your favorites or help us see possible issues or challenges to the verbiage and/or translations. We need YOUR input and will use these sessions time to listen as you share your concerns or as you strive to build support for your favorite proposed 2024 slogans and 2025 themes. * These 2024 slogan suggestions came from state reps and CSLP membership from across the nation and have been vetted by CSLP's attorney for possible IP/copyright conflicts. There are nine strong candidates remaining after removing those with potential risk or conflict. * Attached to this email is a list of the 2024 slogans with their Espa?ol translations and the 2025 theme proposals. Now is the time to identify the best possible slogans and themes. Your input may influence the final vote by the state reps at the CSLP Annual Meeting on September 23. * These sessions are open to all membership. If you have any insights and would like to help us avoid unfortunate translations in the future please add one of the listening sessions to your calendar. * Links to the Zoom sessions: * Topic: Theme and Slogan Listening Session 1 Time: Wednesday Sep 8, 2021 @ 3:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82478119844?pwd=Mjh1djF2MWFNRXRwMy9XcjZtOEJvQT09 * Topic: Theme and Slogan Listening Session 2 Time: Friday Sep 10, 2021 @ 11:00 AM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83023409600?pwd=VFkxR0NMN1hkWWpnNFZqUFphZVV1Zz09 * Topic: Theme and Slogan Listening Session 3 Time: Monday Sep 13, 2021 @ 12:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89765585818?pwd=THZYWklLL1dyTTFzT3hPOWtGRC84UT09 Membership Input Session Manuals, Website and More ? Our village council cancelled all of Los Lunas recreation department's fall indoor sports, so we figured we shouldn't even attempt in person programming, especially involving kids too young to be vaccinated. We're doing virtual story times and STEM activities. We're also providing craft and STEM kits. We're hosting a virtual author visit in September and providing outdoor drone building/flying classes in October. We might provide an outdoor story time while the weather remains warm enough. At our library, every other computer is disabled for social distancing, but there are no other restrictions on visitors as of yet (other than masks, of course). I'm pretty bummed out about no in person programs. I think I'm in the throes of digital fatigue. I found that planning, communicating and managing logistics for our digital programming this summer was way more exhausting and time-consuming than in-person programming. Did anyone else have the same issue? Or advice for creating, advertising, and managing virtual programs that worked really well? Not only was it frustrating to have no in-person feedback during the program, I had some technical difficulties, too. When you do a virtual program, you are "on stage" just as much as with an in-person program, but without the encouragement of seeing smiles, hearing laughs, or having kids ask questions. I think that could be why it feels draining. I didn't have a partner for most of my programs, so it was just me all alone, unlike with in-person programs, when I at least have another staff member in the room who can help create a positive atmosphere. It felt to me like the story room had turned into a craft kit sweatshop where we were making kits and videos all the time. We gave away hundreds of kits, but just a few people gave us feedback! So far, I have not been told to avoid indoor programs but I would prefer outdoor over virtual any day!
