I think if it wasn't for Snapchat giving me a daily filter I would have no idea what day it is... Anyhoo, lots of things up in the air for SRP 2020 right now and hopefully the following will help with that a bit: * The recording and chat transcript of yesterday's meeting can be found on Google at: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1FYO2xNwBvovY14WKJaD21ZEkA9bfwfaZ. * If your library is interested in joining the statewide online summer reading log, and you haven't yet told me (if you were on the fence or this is the first you're learning about it), please do so by Friday May 8th. So far we have about 25 libraries and would love to have more! If you have questions about this, we had a Zoom last Friday that you can watch using the above link or feel free to email me! I hope to finalize the online and paper logs as soon as possible so you can start spreading the word to your families. * I had a request from a library yesterday about the possibility of sharing the cost of a virtual performer with one or more libraries, which I think is super cool! Libraries don't need to be in proximity for this to happen and I'm more than happy to help facilitate these connections. If this is something you're interested in doing, email me by Friday, May 8th and I will create a group for you all to discuss the who and how and when of it all! * The last of the PBS/Explora/NMSL early childhood educator webinars will be this Thursday at 1:00 p.m. on cooking chemistry. The link to register is https://cooking-chemistry.eventbrite.com. We had some technical difficulties last week but it was still a lot of fun so please stop by and share with those in your communities who might find this helpful! * The next SRP meeting will be next Tuesday, May 12th at 10 a.m. * Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81314017101?pwd=KzJuY0xJNmJ3d2lXM1QzSVRObzZFUT09 Meeting ID: 813 1401 7101 Password: Flipflops I think that's all I have, I haven't finished all of my tea yet so I may be missing things... but I'll leave you here for now! Twelve rural public libraries will receive $15,000 to enhance STEAM offerings for their communities, three STEAM exhibitions, and more. We are especially hoping to reach communities with a large Latino population. Please see below for more info or feel free to reach out. Take care, Sarah, ALA Public Programs Office *** http://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2020/05/ala-announces-steam-funding-and-exhibitions-rural-libraries-serving-latino Public library workers in rural communities are invited to participate in a project that will bring culturally inclusive STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) programming and exhibitions to their patrons, especially often-underreached Latino populations. The initiative is offered by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute (NCIL/SSI), the American Library Association (ALA), Twin Cities PBS (TPT), Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI), and Education Development Center (EDC), with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Through the STAR Net STEAM Equity Project, 12 public libraries will receive $15,000 over four years (winter 2020 - summer 2024) to participate in professional development activities, support community partnerships and purchase STEAM learning materials. In partnership with library staff and their community collaborators, the project will engage families to empower tweens in STEAM culture and learning. Participating library workers will learn STEAM programming and outreach strategies through virtual and in-person workshops. Starting in 2021, they will host three traveling STEAM exhibitions; facilitate three STEAM programs annually; create and lend three STEAM outreach kits; and develop a STEAM exploration space in their library. Read the project FAQs for full project benefits and requirements. Those interested in applying on behalf of their library are invited to complete a brief, 15-minute Notice of Intent (NOI) about their community demographics and needs by July 20. Submissions will be reviewed by the STEAM Equity project team, and eligible applicants will be invited to submit a full project proposal in August 2020. Learn more and begin the application process online. The STAR Net STEAM Equity Project strives to create learning opportunities at the intersection of transforming library services, gender equity and cultural inclusion (especially with Latino families), STEAM learning, and positive youth development. The United States' ability to compete economically and find innovative solutions to emerging problems is increasingly dependent on a workforce that is skilled in STEM disciplines. To solve tomorrow's problems and continue exploring our world and our universe, diverse and creative thinkers must be welcomed into STEAM learning and empowered to pursue STEM careers. With more than 50 million individuals, the Latino population is now the U.S.' largest ethnic minority group and the fastest growing segment of the rural population. However, Latinos earn only 9 percent of STEM bachelor's degrees nationwide and make up only 11 percent of the U.S. science and engineering workforce. The situation for Latinas is even worse, with Latinas earning only 3.6 percent of STEM bachelor's degrees and making up only 1.8 percent the U.S. science and engineering workforce. Public libraries are hubs for lifelong learning, especially in rural communities that may not have easy access to the scientific and academic centers in more urban locations, and they can bridge the gap to better prepare the next generation of Latino Americans for careers in STEM. The STAR Net STEAM Equity Project offers a wealth of expertise and free resources from ALA's Public Programs Office and Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services, in collaboration with the Space Science Institute's National Center for Interactive Learning (project lead), Twin Cities PBS (TPT) and their SciGirls program, the Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI) and the Education Development Center (EDC). The project builds on the STAR Library Network, or STAR Net (where "STAR" stands for Science-Technology Activities and Resources), which offers free STEAM Ahead @ Home resources and a searchable STEM Activity Clearinghouse. Librarians and library workers are invited to use STEAM learning resources, including gender equitable and culturally responsive digital media, hands-on activities and family resources from the award-winning PBS series, SciGirls and Latina SciGirls. STAR Net STEAM Equity's library outreach advisors are Veronica Casanova, librarian at the Tulare County (Calif.) Library System's Exeter Branch Library; Miguel Ruiz, supervising librarian at Evanston (Ill.) Public Library; and Flo (Florencia) Trujillo, youth services coordinator at the Farmington (N.M.) Public Library. The project's planning committee includes Dr. Alicia Santiago, a developmental neurobiologist and Latino outreach specialist at SciGirls; Cheryl Ju?rez, senior director of professional development at the Frost Science Museum; Dr. Damary Bonilla-Rodriguez, a national leading authority on leadership development, especially as it pertains to diversity and inclusion; and Maddie Correa Zeigler, an informal science educational consultant and grant proposal developer. Regards, Dale Savage Library Development Bureau Chief New Mexico State Library =========================================== Virtual Storytimes: Filming Before, During, and After COVID- 19 with Melanie Borski-Howard, Cydney Clink, Julie Crabb, Alice Eccles, Jessica Fredrickson Wednesday, May 13th from 3:00 ? 4:00pm EST The world was turned upside down in early 2020. Many libraries were closed suddenly and children's librarians were asked to do storytimes online, some with materials and some without. Authors and musicians were giving permission for use, but the rules of copyright have, and continue to be dubious. This brings up many important issues as to what our role is as library storytellers before, during and after this pandemic. This webinar hopes to answer questions regarding virtual storytimes and empower library workers to rise to the challenge of providing professional online early literacy to our patrons. Our presenters will answer common questions about copyright, best practices, technology, accessibility and more. Our presenters are also happy to take follow-up questions and chat more! Attendees will learn how to: ? Get a basic idea of how copyright works ? Find resources for copyrighted material before, after and during COVID 19 ? Implement best practices in every storytime including accessibility ? Filming tips and strategies for a virtual storytime ? Do storytimes with limited materials ? Technology tips for doing storytime from home Biography ~ Melanie Borski-Howard Melanie has studied music, theater and received her Masters in English from Utah State University. She is currently a Youth Services Librarian at Boulder Public Library in Boulder Colorado, where she has been doing storytimes since she started in 2001. Melanie had a library goal of creating a BLOG (similar to JBRARY) in 2016, but once she started collaborating with Boulder Channel 8 television station, the BLOG evolved to an actual filming of her storytimes with Alice. She is currently in her second season of the local televised program, Read With Us where they have filmed 14 shows. (https://boulderlibrary.org/youth/read-with-us/) Biography ~ Cydney Clink Cydney is the Head of Youth Services at Mesa County Libraries in Grand Junction, Colorado. Over the past 20 years her passion for breaking down barriers and meeting patrons where they are has led her to create innovative library services and programming for diverse audiences, and to deliver storytimes and other family programs in various settings such as convenience stores, apartment complex laundry rooms, barns, and even a bar [insert audible gasp here]. Now Cydney has added live FaceBook storytimes to that list. Cydney holds a bachelor?s in Sociology with an emphasis in Family Studies from the University of Northern Colorado and a master?s degree in Library Science from Emporia State University. Biography ~ Julie Crabb Julie is currently a Children's Guide for Anythink Libraries sparking curiosity for those in Adams County, Colorado. She is lucky enough to serve as a Joint Chief for Storytime Underground, an online community of youth services professionals committed to the idea that early literacy is not a luxury. In 2018, she was awarded the Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy Rising Star Award for her passion and dedication to supporting early literacy opportunities for children in the community. When not at the library, she has a fondness for baking with her daughter, an adoration of geese, and an unhealthy relationship with spaghetti. Biography ~ Alice Eccles Alice has been a book nerd her entire life, haunting the nearest library wherever she lived. She started at Boulder Public Library in 2007 and loves doing storytimes for babies and preschoolers including recording Read With Us, https://boulderlibrary.org/youth/read-with-us/, which is a televised storytime. She enjoys coming up with programs and activities for kids, and occasionally dresses up as characters from picture books. Biography ~ Jessica Fredrickson Jessica is a former teacher turned Youth Services Librarian. She currently serves the Douglas County Libraries community. Jessica is also the Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy (CLEL) Training and Advocacy Chair, and one of the 26% of adults in the United States who experiences disability. She blogs about storytimes, programs and other library life aspects at www.storytimeinthestacks.com. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am so very sorry and can promise to try to be better about that. We discussed what people are planning on doing, heard from Rio Rancho and Albuquerque how they're handling prizes and reading logs and heard from some of the others (Los Lunas received a grant and is giving away backpacks with school and exercise supplies!). I discussed the Google Group I created for those that are participating in the online summer reading log. It's a means of communication with those 25 libraries so we don't bog down the listserv. If you are one of those libraries, please accept the invitation that came through yesterday from Google and let me know TODAY how many paper logs you need. There was also a discussion about lemon Krispy Kremes, I'm not proud of it but it is me! Again, I apologize for those that rely on the recordings and if you have any other questions or comments, please don't hesitate to reach out! Have a great Tuesday! CSLP mini manual for summer feeding sites is live Message-ID: Good morning Youth Services staff! This morning the Child And Community Well-Being Committee released their mini manual for summer feeding sites. Please read the text below as it fully explains what this amazing committee has managed to create for you all! Deanne Dekle Youth Services & Outreach Consultant New Mexico State Library 505-476-9705 1-800-340-3890 deanne.dekle at state.nm.us [EL-4 small] ________________________________ I'm pleased to share that "Read Up!", a mini-manual for non-library summer feeding sites, created by the CSLP Child and Community Well-Being Committee (CCWB), is now available for download on the CSLP website: https://www.cslpreads.org/libraries-and-summer-food/#resource Read Up! is a free 26-page resource for Summer Food Service Program sites and other feeding sites outside of libraries, featuring easy-to-implement enrichment activities that support reading, creativity, and fun. The activities are adapted from the 2020 CSLP manual. A section on Reading and Literacy Basics, written by the team, guides such sites on how they can organize literacy-supportive activities even with no books on hand, and how they can partner with libraries, involve teens, and collaborate with other community entities. MANY thanks to the CCWB team responsible for this project: Linda Bartley Ally Doliboa Stacy Hill Janet Ingraham Dwyer Danielle Margarida Jennifer McNeal Janet Reynolds Lisa Valerio-Nowc And to Cathy Lancaster, the Library of Michigan, and LM's contract designer who turned our Google doc into a crisp, appealing, professional publication. And to Luke Kralik for support and encouragement throughout. When this resource was envisioned last spring, and through the fall and winter when we worked on selecting and adapting CSLP manual programs and writing the Reading and Literacy Basics content, no one could have had any idea we'd be releasing this resource into a world without congregate settings such as summer camps and sit-down lunches at parks, rec centers, and churches. Though states are starting to "open up," there is of course so much unknown about the future and about the duration of the public health emergency. I have no idea if this resource will be useful to anyone in summer 2020. But it was written to be "evergreen", not specifically tied to the 2020 Summer Library Program (though it takes its activities from the current program), and will be helpful and encouraging whenever sites are safely permitted to feed and engage young people in congregate settings. Please share, however and whenever appropriate, with public libraries and with your state's SFSP administering agency and other partners in child nutrition. Message-ID: Good morning Youth Services staff! Thank you to all who attended the meeting today! It's always so good to see you all (even if it's just seeing names), and really is the highlight of my week! I actually remembered to record today's meeting and you can find it and a copy of the chat at this link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1FYO2xNwBvovY14WKJaD21ZEkA9bfwfaZ. One of the big things we discussed today is the amazing New Mexico Library Foundation through a very generous grant is funding some virtual performances this summer! Explora is going to make 6 STEM/STEAM videos for us- 3 different fairy tales and a video on each for little kids and one for older kids! And Andy Mason is going to take over 5 library Facebook pages! You will either make him an admin on your page or give him a temporary password and he will do a Facebook Live performance as the library! Your patrons can watch live, request songs, talk to him and he'll give stuff away! This is a FREE program to you (thanks to the NMLF), you just have to have a Facebook page for the library (a page, not a profile) and a willingness to let him take it over for about an hour! I'll get the schedule of all 5 libraries and share it out statewide so that people can watch, even if they're not your patrons. If your library is not one of the ones chosen, I recommend sharing it out so your patrons and FB followers can still participate. If your library is interested in being one of these 5, please fill out this Google Form by Friday 3 p.m. https://forms.gle/Rtex2ZoLLXCCUS4P9 and I'll pick 5 libraries and we'll go from there! For those libraries participating in the statewide reading log, please accept the Google Group invite, that's the only place I'll be sharing information on so if you're not there, you will not get emails and info. I'm planning on holding a Zoom later this week (I'll record if you can't make it) to go over details and share out some information, so PLEASE accept the invitation I sent out last week. If you are one of those libraries that hasn't accepted but it participating in the program and never received the invite, let me know ASAP! If you have any questions about anything, let me know! Have a great Tuesday everyone! The link to today's Zoom recording and chat can be found at: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1FYO2xNwBvovY14WKJaD21ZEkA9bfwfaZ. It was kind of a short one, we watched the awesome stop-motion video Los Lunas shared and gave feedback on a flyer for Belen. We also discussed the possibility of ending the meetings but it seems to be that everyone there wants them to continue (which is my preference too) even after you all open back up and after SRP. So, if you can attend that's wonderful and it makes me happy but if you can't, I totally understand! As things begin to pick up, it may not always be feasible to attend so I'll keep recording for those that want to catch up. Have a great week everyone and I hope to have news to share with you all this week on a couple different things. Karen has been with CSLP from nearly the beginning and has seen many wonderful summer programs come and go. We wish Karen the best as she starts her next adventure! How is your library "Reimagining" summer? Please send your photos, ideas, and any informative details to Luke Kralik at: luke.kralik at cslpreads.org I would love to share them in our newsletter. Looking for some ideas to use or share? https://www.pinterest.com/cslpreads/ Increasingly, public libraries are feeding hungry bodies as well as hungry minds during the summer ? and throughout the year. The CSLP?s Child and Community Well-Being committee is developing resources to support and encourage library participation in the USDA?s Summer Food Service Program and other initiatives to help kids and teens stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out. These resources include the Libraries and Summer Food page on the CSLP website; a Facebook group for news, support, and resource-sharing; and an ongoing series of stories showcasing the experiences of libraries around the country. Supporting Food Literacy When You Can?t Gather: Read Eat Grow Gets Creative By Rebecca Antill, Youth Services Consultant, South Carolina State Library For several years, the South Carolina State Library has been supporting a statewide Food Literacy initiative that we titled ?Read Eat Grow.? This initiative supports libraries in offering a variety of programs that help patrons learn the story of their food. We have assisted our public libraries with programs about gardening, composting, cookbook clubs, cooking demonstrations, healthy living, health literacy, nutrition, and so much more! Of course, most of these all happen in person, so when the COVID-19 pandemic closed both the State Library and our public libraries, we knew we had to think outside the box. These videos feature Devon Andrews and her family mixing up easy recipes together at home. Devon also shares science demonstrations and shows that families can replicate the learning opportunities at low cost, though not necessarily low mess! Rebecca Antill, the Youth Services Consultant at the State Library, and Ellen Dunn, Public Information Coordinator, also filmed themselves at home cooking quick healthy recipes for library staff to prepare. At the Lexington County Public Library, staff have been assisting at school lunch sites, passing out free books while observing the proper safety protocols and social distancing. Another public library will be offering take home recipe ideas paired with a Facebook live demonstration from library staff throughout the summer. We are excited to see what other creative ways our libraries will find to encourage healthy living and promote food security to their communities in the upcoming months! Designing a Program with All Families in Mind by Susan Locander, Youth Services Manager, North Riverside Public Library Library summer reading programs are beloved community traditions that promote literacy and encourage creative expression. Yet, they can seem unwelcoming and inaccessible to some families. Incorporating flexibility and choice into both your program design and rollout can be key to creating a program that will work for all. * Registering for a summer reading program by completing a traditional registration form may be problematic or seem intrusive. Before registration opens, determine what information is essential and what?s not, and let those decisions determine the registration data you request. (To get a sense of the wide variety of families your readers could belong to, visit the CSLP Inclusion Resources on Alternative Families: https://www.cslpreads.org/inclusion-resources/alternative-families ) Allowing families to provide the information that best fits their unique situation may increase their feeling of acceptance, and reduce stress all around. * Regular logging of books read or time spent reading is often challenging for families, particularly when the readers are too young to take on this responsibility. Just keeping track of paper logs can be difficult, and even more so for readers living in multiple locations, and/or with multiple parents, grandparents or guardians during the program. Allowing readers to create their own reading goals and being flexible with reporting deadlines and methods ? online, phone, email, paper (?official? log or other) -- can help them get the most benefit from your program. * No matter how well you prepare, unanticipated and challenging situations will arise. Many libraries will be offering all or mostly online summer reading programs this year, yet the goals remain the same: to promote literacy and encourage creative expression while building community. As we work to meet this year?s unique challenges, designing your program to include all types of families will help you not only expand, but also strengthen your community.
