In case you haven't heard, 2020 is a Census year and it officially opens on March 12th. The book, Everyone Counts, which isn't Census related but could be with a title like that came across my desk a while ago. I thought it'd make a good giveaway for this time of the year. I'll give it to one library who emails me directly what they're planning to do to promote, support, program for the Census! Please email by 10 a.m. Tuesday (the 3rd) and I'll put everyone into the Ninja! And if you're looking for more resources, everyone's favorite State Data Coordinator, Carmelita Aragon, created an incredibly useful LibGuide for the 2020 Census! I noticed that the fifth graders in particular do not seem to be focusing on checking out books. I suggested to the teacher that I could give a library tour as well as some instruction to see if we could get this classroom interested in borrowing reading materials. My question for you, my fellow librarians, is what are some things that are appealing to the fifth graders you know? The boys in this group especially are tough. I know gaming is big, and I do have some books on Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft, but I have only so many of those to go around, so they're usually checked out. I have put out LEGOs for them as a desperate measure to keep them focused, but that still is not learning to use the library system to look for information. If that is true, maybe let the notion that this has to be the year they spend really understanding how to research at the library go if you can. Feed into what they love. If you have enough computers for them to pair up on you could introduce them to coding using the hourofcode site or Scratch. There are a lot of tutorials so you don't have to be an expert. Once they see what they can do (like build their own games) they may get drawn into that. Digital literacy is certainly a valid teaching function :). Along the same lines if you can afford or borrow some of the robotic simple programming toys like these https://www.stemtoyexpert.com/best-stem-toys-coding-programming/, that would likely engage them in a learning way. Or if computers and budget are slim you could present a different STEAM challenge each week and leave some books out that will tie into it. For example, a bridge building challenge and your bridge books. You can find numerous challenges online involving simple materials like straws, toothpicks, crafts sticks, paper, etc... Deanne Dekle Youth Services & Outreach Consultant New Mexico State Library 505-476-9705 1-800-340-3890 deanne.dekle at state.nm.us Hi, Deanne. I just want to reach out and start a conversation about how libraries are approaching cautionary measures from corona virus. Libraries as we know are touchy feely places with all our check out resources that pass from hand to hand and home to home. Additionally our library has a lot of options for kiddos. We have toys, building blocks etc. I am mostly just wondering if we can exchange some strategies for decreasing vulnerability to this new virus. Here are some things I've been doing: Cleaning the toys whipping down kids computers putting up a few signs to encourage parents to encourage kids to wash hands before and after library use I don't mean to be paranoid, but its pretty clear to see that libraries and children's sections are high use and the type of environment worthy of concern. Anyway, I'd love to hear about what other precautions are being taken at libraries. I just wanted to share something that my counterpart in Iowa, Angie Manfredi (and bonus she used to be the head of Youth Services in Los Alamos!), has sent to her libraries. It's a list of resources you can share with your parents during these weeks with the kids at home to help keep them educated and entertained. Please don't hesitate to share any others that you come across with the list, we've gotta help each other through these times! . Storyline Online 7(Don't forget this resource of celebrities reading picture books . An online calendar of KidLit events 3, including schedules for creators reading from their own work/sharing things online: . Reading Connects Us: A newsletter about virtual learning that is full of links to lessons, things authors are sharing, etc. . Picture Book Read Alouds 3 - this is made up of authors reading their own work, including a list from the Indianapolis Public Library with over 100 titles, and titles in other languages. . Read, Wonder, and Learn 2 - this is a lot of authors sharing lessons, excerpts, etc from their books. . Authors Everywhere 3 - A YouTube channel with authors sharing their books and work, will also, hopefully, host panels and other discussions. . Scholastic's Learn at Home 2 - Daily lesson plans that include books from Weston Woods, activities, and more . Jarrett Lerner's Activities Page 3 lots of print outs/activities that encourage creativity and story creation Hope you all stay healthy and safe and I'm here if you need to brainstorm ideas or help with anything. I know a lot of libraries that have closed are focusing on weeding and that's kind of my most favorite thing in librarianship so if you have questions with that, I'm always happy to help! I'm also rethinking our new book display, which is currently an octagonal thing that doesn't fit the space well. My director wants to use that awkwardly-shaped display elsewhere in the library, and I have the go-ahead to choose something that will show off our books better. I'm also shopping online for some better shelves for our children's graphic novels. Currently they are housed in some magazine displays, face-out. Daily Drop-In for New Mexico Librarians Hi everyone, As you all know, it has been a crazy week, and this listserv has been hopping as everyone shares info, tries to make plans for the coming weeks, and just tries to keep our collective heads above water. In order to provide a little more human contact for us all (although over the web), Library Development will be hosting a daily drop-in meeting for New Mexico librarians each day at Noon. The link is below. We aren't starting out with an agenda. Library Development staff will open the Zoom room each day, and you are free to drop in, ask questions of us and each other, share news, etc. From time to time if there are important developments, we can share those and and discuss them. Basically, this will just be a place where you can hang out with other librarians with similar interests and challenges. I invite you to drop in on Monday! The same link will continue to work for each day's drop-in. Regards to you all! I'm in every day to obsessively read the news and library updates. I'm updating our website as new info comes in. I'm also slowly doing some cataloging of the bunch of stuff that came in right before we shut our doors. And of course, working on orders for when we reopen, depending on when that is. My Assistant Director/Children's Librarian was scheduled for vacation before this (yay! A week in AZ. home with the family all in the same house) and will probably return next week to work on programming, find resources for home parents and start planning for summer. The very part time aide is cleaning DVDs to an inch of their lives and other projects. I have a few volunteers who are sufficiently healthy and stir-crazy and I've been letting a couple in at a time to work on fixing cataloging problems, cleaning items (the Legos probably haven't been this clean forever) and other things as they are willing. I'm also starting work on our 2018 GO Bond as the 2016 might have finally been released by the County. AND I'm wondering if this will be the thing that pushes us over into having digital materials in our collection. Given the age of our population, our proximity to Santa Fe and our limited collection budget combined with the continues popularity of our print collection, it hasn't been an issue. But I'm wondering if this will be the thing that kills print. Or deals it a substantial wound. What are the average costs for libraries out there with e-collections? I haven't reviewed in a while and am afraid to look. Below is a great resource from StarNet for any online programming you might be providing during this time. Hope you?re all staying healthy and occupied during these uncertain times. Deanne Dekle Youth Services & Outreach Consultant New Mexico State Library 505-476-9705 1-800-340-3890 deanne.dekle at state.nm.us [EL-4 small] [Image removed by sender.] March 24, 2020 In response to the needs of library staff and their patrons who are practicing self-isolation and social distancing during the Coronavirus Pandemic, STAR Net is developing a special collection of resources through a new "STEAM Ahead @ Home" initiative. This initiative will disseminate a variety of STEAM content (via a newsletter format) that library staff can incorporate into their current online programming. In order to provide the most effective resources, we have created a short survey to collect input on how your library is currently functioning and what your needs are during this time. Please take a few moments to complete this important survey so we can determine how to best serve your library and its community during this unprecedented time. Survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2DKBYG5 In the meantime, we have put together an initial collection of online resources that library staff can review and distribute to their patrons. Virtual Programs Use this featured resource to add easy, hands-on STEAM activities (using common household materials) to your online Story Time programs. Note: Book recommendations are included. [Image removed by sender.] Virtual Program: Sky Heroes Participants celebrate their heroes by creating connect-the-dot star patterns to represent them. View This Virtual Program Activity Families at Home Below is a set of resources that can be provided directly to families without the need of facilitation by library staff. [Image removed by sender.] Hands-on Activity: Daylight in a Bottle Celebrate Earth Day at home by harnessing the power of natural resources! This family guide explores how you can read a secret message from a friend or light up a room with just two things: free, clean energy from the Sun and a water bottle. The activity has a how-to video (below) as well as a short, four minute video, "A Liter of LIght @ Night", showing how this technology has been used practically in other countries. View The Facilitation Guide [Image removed by sender.] How-to Video: Daylight in a Bottle This how-to video demonstrates how patrons can experiment with radiant energy and the concept of refraction to develop a lighting system made out of recycled materials. Water bottle-based systems like the ones created in this activity are used in some impoverished areas. I've been receiving A LOT of emails about Summer Reading 2020 and what to do if we're still social distancing at that point. I thought it best for us all to have one conversation together so I've set up a Zoom meeting for next Tuesday (the 31st) at 10 am. It will be only be 40 minutes (that's all we're allowed with the free account) and I'm encouraging everyone who is concerned about SRP 20 or has questions or wants to brainstorm to attend. For those that cannot attend, I'm hoping to record it and I will share it out afterwards and I'm also hoping to start a thread on the Youth Services listserv after so people can have one place for info and can get ideas. Meeting info is below, if you have Zoom questions, don't hesitate to reach out and I will try to troubleshoot. Right now, there's not a way to call in using a phone because of the overload of people using Zoom so the audio has to come through your computer or mobile device. Topic: Summer Reading 2020 Discussion Time: Mar 31, 2020 10:00 AM Mountain Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting https://zoom.us/j/283588332 Meeting ID: 283 588 332 See you all then! Hope everyone is staying busy, healthy and sane (cabin fever is REAL!)! Just a reminder that tomorrow, Tuesday the 31st, I'm holding a Zoom meeting at 10 a.m. specific to Summer Reading 2020. My plan is to record it for those that can't attend and afterwards to start a thread on the Youth Services listserv to discuss further ideas/plans. Please attend tomorrow if you can, pajamas and uncombed hair are welcome as are pets and small children! The link to access is below and if you have Zoom questions ahead of time, please don't hesitate to reach out! And if your library is doing virtual storytimes or sharing great resources or fun videos via Facebook, please send them my way and I've been sharing what I come across on the State Library's Facebook page. If you don't have a Facebook page for the library, I'm also happy to help you set one up, virtually; it's a great way to share information during times of social distancing. Cut the green cardstock to make a 6-inch square. Cut a window out of the green cardstock to make a frame approx. ? to 1-inch wide . Use the birch tree stencil (available from several manufacturers) and the colored inks on the white cardstock square to make a background of trees OR provide colored pencils or markers and have the children draw a woodland background. Cut two 1-inch strips from the leftover cardstock (any color) and cut each strip in half. Accordion fold one strip by folding in half and then make two more folds on each side of the center fold. The result will look like a W with wings coming down from each side. Apply glue to the inside surface of the last flap (the wing on the right side of the W) and adhere to the back on the bottom left side of the white cardstock square. Apply glue to the outside surface of the first flap (the wing on the left side of the W) and adhere to the back on the bottom left side of the green frame. The two squares are now attached by an accordion fold. Repeat for the right side and on each side at the top. Cut two strips of green cardstock approx. ? to 1-inch wide and glue each to one of the accordion folds at both left and right so that they stretch across from left to right. Use a photo or word processor to resize the spot art to be approx. 3 to 5 inches high, cut out, and adhere with glue to the cardstock strips that run from left to right so that they stand in front of the backdrop at different levels. Looking for some ideas to use or share? https://www.pinterest.com/cslpreads/ Increasingly, public libraries are feeding hungry bodies as well as hungry minds during the summer ? and throughout the year. The CSLP?s Child and Community Well-Being committee is developing resources to support and encourage library participation in the USDA?s Summer Food Service Program and other initiatives to support health, wellness, and community well-being. These resources include the Libraries and Summer Food page on the CSLP website; a Facebook group for news, support, and resource-sharing; and an ongoing series of stories showcasing the experiences of libraries around the country. Feeding the Whole Child... and the rest of the community. Shane Hoffman, Plain City Public Library, OH & Team Vittles We?ll cut straight to the chase today. The Coronavirus is creating a massive strain on our nation?s ability to feed itself. It has made the poor poorer, it has created massive unemployment, and more. Our Feeding America Food Banks and countless other organizations are doing their best, but let?s talk about ways libraries can get involved. Right now, some schools may need your help. The schools in my state have been closed for weeks, but yours may just now be closing. Contact your schools and see if the library can be of any assistance with meal delivery or pick up. It?s possible that library van or bookmobile can help get lunches to rural kids who cannot make it to a pick-up site. Maybe your library is positioned well to be a pickup point for the ?Grab and Go? lunches many school districts are providing. If your school is just getting to its official spring break week, the school may not be able to provide meals to kids during that time. As a well-connected community partner, the library may be able to assist in coordinating a response during that time if no other group in the community has already taken charge. Most of us know about the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which allows libraries and non-profits to serve meals to those under age 18 during the summer when they may not have access to free or reduced-price lunches at school. These meals can be the only food access some kids have. Did you know that there is a similar program called the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)? https://www.fns.usda.gov/sfsp/summer-food-service-program CACFP gives us access, with roughly the same eligibility and guidelines as SFSP, to after school snacks and after school meals during the school year. The response to the current epidemic has ramped up the ability, in many areas, to provide shelf-stable meals in bulk. This has the benefit of making it easier for many libraries to serve meals, as temperature control for hot and cold meals can be a significant obstacle. It also has the benefit of making meals more portable to reach remote sites that may not have access to local vendors. https://www.fns.usda.gov/cacfp/child-and-adult-care-food-program The statistics used to determine eligibility for SFSP and CACFP were determined late last year. The current situation has certainly altered the picture and created much more need. We may need to be proactive in contacting our congressional representatives about recalculating eligibility for this year. https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative https://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm Does your library do outreach services? Many food banks have a ?Senior Box Program? that provides a week or month worth of food to eligible seniors. Your outreach service could provide a lifeline to shut-in seniors. https://www.feedingamerica.org/take-action/advocate/federal-hunger-relief-programs/csfp Most of us have heard of the ?Little Free Library?. Did you know that there is also a ?Little Free Pantry? movement out there? It works the same way as the library version, but with shelf stable food and supplies. Check out http://www.littlefreepantry.org/ for more information. Lastly, a big step for many libraries could be to open a food pantry in the library. Operate a drive-through pantry. Host a mobile food pantry. Libraries are indeed eligible to serve as food pantries. Most food pantries are volunteer-run and have very limited hours. Libraries can help with that problem as well as help avoid the stigma of walking into a food pantry. That stigma prevents many people from getting the help they so desperately need. For more information on these opportunities, check with your Feeding America Regional Food Bank. You can discover yours at https://www.feedingamerica.org/find-your-local-foodbank. Hungry kids can?t learn. We can play roles in alleviating hunger as big or as small as our situations allow. I urge you to consider what you can do as we plan for a summer and school year that may find many doing without. If you are already active, I urge you to think if there is more you can do. If you are just getting into the game, start that conversation now. To join in the discussion about how libraries are working with food insecurity, join the CSLP ? Today's meeting this morning for Summer Reading 2020 was a lot of fun to see so many faces and hear what people are thinking in regards to Summer Reading. The big thing that came out of the meeting this morning was to have at least one more meeting (if not make it a weekly occurrence). I've gone ahead and scheduled that for next Tuesday, April 7th at 10 a.m. I've included the invitation at the bottom of this email. I'm unable to attach the recording of the meeting, too big of a file, so I've created a Google folder that I'll continue to add items to as we continue to have these meetings. There's also the chat from this morning and there is A LOT of useful information shared in the chat so please take a look at that while you while you watch the video. You can access the files at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FYO2xNwBvovY14WKJaD21ZEkA9bfwfaZ?usp=sharing. If you have any problems accessing or questions, let me know!
