At Carlsbad Public Library, we prefer to track reading minutes so everyone
can read at a comfortable pace instead of trying to complete a certain
number of pages, chapters, or books. Every 15-minute increment earns a
ticket (from a roll of tickets we buy at Walmart). We have a prize cart
available 2 hours every Wednesday morning so kids can spend their
accumulated tickets on the prizes which are most meaningful to them. We
have Game Day going on with crafts and board games at the same time so
there is more than just one thing to do (picking up prizes).

In the past we asked kids to just mark a tally mark for each 15 minutes of
reading, and limited the amount of reading time you can claim to 1 hour
total per day to prevent the extremely prize-motivated kids from claiming
they have read 12 hours in one day, haha. We also don't encourage
competition against other readers for a big prize, but we do track the
groups' minutes to see how many hours of reading we can build up over the
summer.

We used to have it set up so people could come and pick up prizes any time.
This resulted in a lot of wasted staff time. If someone can't come on
Wednesdays, they usually let me know and my standard response is that I
will accommodate their schedule and let them pick up prizes at a time when
they can make it. I usually have just one or two requests to do this the
entire summer.
