Every 15-minute increment earns a ticket (from a roll of tickets we buy at Walmart). We have a prize cart available 2 hours every Wednesday morning so kids can spend their accumulated tickets on the prizes which are most meaningful to them. We have Game Day going on with crafts and board games at the same time so there is more than just one thing to do (picking up prizes). In the past we asked kids to just mark a tally mark for each 15 minutes of reading, and limited the amount of reading time you can claim to 1 hour total per day to prevent the extremely prize-motivated kids from claiming they have read 12 hours in one day, haha. We also don't encourage competition against other readers for a big prize, but we do track the groups' minutes to see how many hours of reading we can build up over the summer. We used to have it set up so people could come and pick up prizes any time. This resulted in a lot of wasted staff time. If someone can't come on Wednesdays, they usually let me know and my standard response is that I will accommodate their schedule and let them pick up prizes at a time when they can make it. I usually have just one or two requests to do this the entire summer. When their bookmark was full, it meant they had read for 4 hours, they turned it in for a prize, another bookmark, and it was an automatic entry into the final prize drawing. It increased the hours our kids read exponentially! We got close to 3500 hours read for the summer, a first for our little library. It went over so well, we are doing it the same way this year. I have attached a PDF copy of what we used last year. We will use the same idea this year, but with artwork from this years theme. We use brightly colored stock paper to create the bookmarks, and buy tens of thousands of small stickers for the kids to use on them! Everyone, parents, kids volunteers, liked the simplicity of this method in comparison to what we have done in the past. I received a question this morning that I thought I would put to you all: how do you run the reading component of a Summer Reading Program? Do you track minutes, books, chapters? Do you use a BINGO sheet? Is there a passive component of your program that someone new could possibly implement? I know how some of you run it, and those that have shared their materials with me I do share out but I just thought I'd get the conversation going for those that might need some inspiration or are thinking of changing it up a bit. I got the idea from storytime underground on FB. I created Little creatures a dragon and Unicorn that I am going to have available and printed for kids to come and write their name and the book title on then I will place on the wall as decorations in the library. I am really hoping this will take the "work" out of tracking reading. My attendance and circulations is up but can't get them to track. I should also mention that when they fill out their creature they also get an entry into a big drawing at the end of the summer. I am hoping this works out this year if not, I'm interested to see what works for other libraries. It includes activities as well as reading categories. We tried minutes for a while, but as a Mom I found that hard to keep track of and I ended up guessing most of the time! Our adult program goes by books, but I think by that age people are on a more level playing field, and it seems to work for them. ________________________________ From: nmythserv-bounces at lists.zianet.com on behalf of Dekle, Deanne, DCA Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2020 10:25 AM To: nmythserv at lists.zianet.com Subject: Youth Services News Summer Reading question Good morning Youth Services staff! She thinks it may have been around 1997, so published before that date. It was not a new book at the time. She had the recollection it was more of a picture book than a chapter book. The book was illustrated, and it was about a person describing what a beautiful home they lived in, with pretty windows, soft upholstery, etc. The surprise ending is that the character walked into the home and you realize that the character is walking on a cat's tongue into the mouth of a cat! I asked her if the book character was a mouse, and she wasn't sure. Has anyone heard of this book? The patron can't recall author or title. I have been doing some searching; apparently the last time she was able to read it, the librarian told her the previous borrower had failed to return the book, so she has not been able to read it since. -- *Beth Nieman, *MLS Youth Services Librarian Carlsbad Public Library 101 S.
