Regarding the wall unit plaything:
I have, not a wall unit, but a floor unit. However, I think I know the kind of thing you are talking about.
Pro: It is something to play with that I don't have to clean up or trip over. It just stays together, so even if I move it from one spot to another, all the parts stay attached and in one place.
Pro/Con: The elements of the play unit can be noisy and distracting to me sometimes as the children swat it to make the gears move or clackety-clack with the beads. However, the noisiness alerts me to the presence of children in the department I might not otherwise have seen come in.
Con: Some parts of the unit no longer function because children broke them. Specifically, they tore off a magnet used to move magnetic balls around, and they figured out how to work loose some parts of a maze, so they are gone. Of the original seven play activities, only five still function.
As for wall-mounted units, I considered some, but have not taken the plunge. I have not much free wall space, and I hesitated to buy something wall-mounted for that reason. I would consider something that could be mounted on the end of a bookcase, though.

Good morning Youth Services staff!
One of your fellow libraries has a question, I said I would post it and forward all responses:
I am currently looking into a wall unit, an activity wall for the smaller kids to play on. Do you know what libraries have them and what they think about it? Good investment or no? THANKS!
