Library workshop
Message-ID: <4006398528b24b078d051ec48d438f51@MBXCAS001.nmes.lcl>
Good Monday morning Youth Services staff!
I'm sending one last reminder to register for the YALSA workshop in Albuquerque next week. This is going to be an all-day, hands on workshop on teen services conducted by the YALSA Continuing Education Consultant, Linda Braun, and a librarian from the Seattle Public Library, Shelley Mastalerz.
If you'd like more information, please visit The Hitchhiker and to register (registration IS required- you can't just show up the day of) please click here. If you have any questions, please let me know!
And on the horizon, a new STEM to Read workshop with Explora is coming in March and we'll hold those in 3 different spots around the state so keep an eye out for that announcement which should be coming later this week.
Have a great rest of your week and hope to see you in Albuquerque next week!

Regarding the wall unit plaything:
I have, not a wall unit, but a floor unit. However, I think I know the kind of thing you are talking about.
Pro: It is something to play with that I don't have to clean up or trip over. It just stays together, so even if I move it from one spot to another, all the parts stay attached and in one place.
Pro/Con: The elements of the play unit can be noisy and distracting to me sometimes as the children swat it to make the gears move or clackety-clack with the beads. However, the noisiness alerts me to the presence of children in the department I might not otherwise have seen come in.
Con: Some parts of the unit no longer function because children broke them. Specifically, they tore off a magnet used to move magnetic balls around, and they figured out how to work loose some parts of a maze, so they are gone. Of the original seven play activities, only five still function.
As for wall-mounted units, I considered some, but have not taken the plunge. I have not much free wall space, and I hesitated to buy something wall-mounted for that reason. I would consider something that could be mounted on the end of a bookcase, though.

Good morning Youth Services staff!
One of your fellow libraries has a question, I said I would post it and forward all responses:
I am currently looking into a wall unit, an activity wall for the smaller kids to play on. Do you know what libraries have them and what they think about it? Good investment or no? THANKS!

Does anyone have a ?guess-ta-mated? price on the Everbrite wall? I just watched a video and that is amazing. The site allows you to put in dimensions for a quote, but I don?t want to go that far if it is going to be out of our price range.

We have neither, owing to lack of space, but we do have some metal shelves that Tracey purchased a magnetic gear set for. They interchange so if some are missing I don?t know about it. They are essentially stuck low on an endcap at the end of the Youth DVDs and they get a lot of use. They are noisy, but given the general noise level in this end of the building?

I called and spoke to Kelly Parkinson. It does have an "erase" button at
the top to wipe out unsavory words or designs. If the board is inactive, it
can be set to erase after 5-10 minutes of inactivity. She will send some
specs and other information to me, which I will share.
It is designed in hexagons instead of straight lines, so you have to give
it some thought to how you would create a letter to write a word.
Standard sizes:
8 feet long by 4 feet high = $25,000.00 plus shipping. Just needs one
outlet behind the unit. No power switch, but two function buttons are
available.
4.5 feet long by 4 feet high = $14,000 plus shipping
Early childhood spaces have a long design but short height so lots of
little children can group together and use it.
8 feet long by 2 feet high = $15,000.00 plus shipping.

We like interactive walls during the summer. The summer before last, we turned the bottom portion of a bulletin board into a LEGO wall very easily and inexpensively. Last summer, Eileen, an awesome children?s librarian, turned the same bulletin board into a popular find it wall, which basically took a few sticks of hot glue, heavy duty foam core, and an assortment of odds and ends. Kids loved looking for things! We?ve also temporary created moveable wall tracks with toilet paper rolls, magnets, and big pomp poms. If anyone has questions, I?m happy to put them in touch with Eileen?families love what she creates.

THANKS!

Good morning Youth Services staff!
It's been well documented that I HATE winter, I hate it so very much... so instead today I'm going to think about the warm, sunny, warm days of summer (that are warm) and ask you to share with me your kickoff and end dates as well as any fun, exciting programs you're having this summer! I like to visit libraries during the summer (when I know I'm not going to run into snow, unlike my adventure yesterday) and if you have a performer or program you have scheduled maybe I can come visit!
And if you have NOT received your voucher order from Demco, please let me know by the end of this week! If you have, yay!, but I don't need to know. If I don't hear from your library I'm going to assume your order has arrived and when the bill comes I will authorize for payment and there's not much we can do afterwards if you haven't received it. So, again, let me know ONLY if you have NOT received your voucher order from Demco.
Have a great rest of your week and stay warm out there- only 5 weeks until Spring!

Hello:) My kick off date is June 4th at 1:30pm starting with Christine Carter from the ICAN program. ICAN is free and it encourages kiddos to eat healthy in a fun way (usually with books and activities) for the kid's. I am ending with a party and drawing for the prizes that are donated on July 23rd. In between I've got Brenda Hollingsworth doing storytelling and Dr. Misty Carter doing her Phases Of the Moon stem book, as well as our annual Water Day!!

Hello, youth librarians!
I am trying to decide whether I will kick off on June 3 or June 4. We'll be
pairing our registration day with a Scholastic Book Fair as we always do.
Also, I've been collecting books all year (I think I have over 1,000 now)
for children to choose from and take home one free book on registration
day. We will have a library scavenger hunt of some kind, plus a craft.
One program I am especially looking forward to is Bedtime Stories with
Singing Vikings on July 10 at 6:30 p.m.! We hosted Opera Unlimited last
summer (literally hosted--in our homes!) and they did a great show for us
about Aesop's Fables. I requested an evening performance of their new show,
The Three Billy Goats Gruff, told with Viking characters. We will offer
this as a bedtime show and encourage kids to wear jammies, bring a teddy,
and will serve cookies and milk afterwards.

To New Mexico Public Libraries:
The NM Museum of Natural History and Science (Museum) and its Foundation have partnered together to bring to New Mexico a unique opportunity to experience the Museum's traveling exhibit "Brain - the Inside Story". In conjunction with the exhibit, the Museum is inviting all students in grades 4-8 to participate in the video contest "Brainy Solutions for a Better Tomorrow". This is the 2nd Annual Video Contest organized by the Museum and attached is the information for the video contest.
The students are asked to prepare a short video describing their vision for a new invention or a new idea or method related to STEAM. It can be a simple solution for a daily life problem (such as a machine that picks up clothes off the floor before mom gets mad) or it can be a solution towards global problem (such as helping bees, water supply etc.). There are no restrictions on the topic -- If they can think it, they can submit it. The videos will be judged based on their organization and presentation skills, uniqueness and creativity.

Our kick-off is May 24 (last day of school). We will have the 501st Legion here for photo ops and some crafts/activities set up. First 100 kids registered get a special goody bag. Goes on all day long, one of my favorite days of the year because everyone is in a super good mood!
Our final program is July 27. The NM Museum of Space History will be doing a hands-on program about Apollo missions, and I think we will also be having a costume contest - come dressed as astronaut, alien, or space-themed-movie/TV character.
In between we have:
June 14 - Builder's Club (everything from Legos to giant cardboard boxes)
June 21 - Andy mason
June 29 - Mud and Water Play Day (another annual favorite!)
July 5 - Adam White
July 12 - Opera Unlimited
July 20 - Misty Carter

Good Tuesday morning Youth Services staff!
I hope you're all well this morning! Only 3 weeks until SPRING (well, 3 week from tomorrow)! Just wanted to send you all a quick reminder that we have some great STEM workshops coming up in March at Rio Rancho, Bayard and Hobbs. The topic of these workshops will be all about space to help you with programming for the summer! If you'd like more information like dates and times, please visit The Hitchhiker. And to register (registration is required but the workshop is FREE), please click here.
This is also the last call for your Summer Reading voucher orders. If you have NOT received your order yet, please let me know ASAP! If you have, fantastic and I'm jealous (since I don't have all of mine yet) but I don't need to know. I only need to know if you have not received your order! If you tell me in a month that you haven't received your order there's not much that I can do at that point so let me know this week if you still don't have it!
I'm also collecting Summer Reading start and end dates as well as any fun programs you have scheduled. I'm keeping a calendar of all of these and hope to visit libraries this summer! So, please let me know your dates!
Last but not least, I'm giving away 3 chapter books on space! All you have to do is respond to this email by tomorrow 8 a.m. and I'll pick throw the names into the NPN and one lucky library will get the books in the attached picture.
Have a great week everyone!

I would like to be entered for the book drawing, Deanne.
I don't know if anyone else has this problem, or if it is just a setting on
my computer, but I never, ever, see any of the attachments, whether text or
images, in these listserv emails. All I see is the notation that an
attachment was "scrubbed."
If it's just me, does anyone know how to change the settings so I can see
them, too?
