I know some are still in Summer Reading, some are enjoying Summer Reading finally being over and some have run away now that it's over! I just wanted to send a reminder about surveys, both librarian and parent/caregiver. It's not too late to ask your parents/caregivers to fill out the survey, even if your program is over. So far, I've received almost 900 surveys from 40 libraries (last year I had almost 1100 from 51 libraries). And remember the top library is each of 4 population tiers will get an additional $50 added to their voucher for SRP 2020! English: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/srp19parents Spanish: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/srp19espanol Your librarian survey, which you'll fill out once your program is complete, is also due this month. Filling out this survey will grant you that base voucher for SRP 2020 as well as your manual for SRP 2020. So far, I've had 33 libraries fill that one out. You'll receive a copy of your answers from Google once it's been submitted so if you have filled it out and haven't received that email that means I have not received your survey! https://forms.gle/4WUgXbejLQ3ypX428 The deadline for both surveys is August 29th and let me know if you have any questions! Yes, you read that subject line correctly, we're jumping ahead to Summer Reading 2023! The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) needs your theme ideas for the 2023 program! The theme is the broad, general topic to frame the summer program for that year. Recent and upcoming themes include: 2016: exercise/sports/wellness 2017: building/construction 2018: music 2019: space 2020: world mythology/fairy tales/folklore 2021: animals 2022: World-Social Justice-Unity-Kindness-Inclusion-Change-Diversity-Equity-Make a Difference-Embrace different Cultures For a complete list of themes visit: https://www.cslpreads.org/programs/years-of-cslp-themes/. Suggestions will be voted on at the CSLP Annual Meeting, held this September in Indianapolis. The call for a slogan to go with the theme will be sent out in the Spring of 2020. The artist for the 2023 program is award winning illustrator Frank Morrison. From his website: Morrison's work can be found in numerous award-winning children's books including Coretta Scott King - John Steptoe Award winner Jazzy Miz Mozetta, NAACP Image Award winner Our Children Can Soar and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, Little Melba and her Big Trombone. His literary client list includes international book publishers Penguin Books, HarperCollins, Hyperion, Random House and National Geographic Kids. One more reminder (there's not many left) to get your librarian survey filled out and returned to me by August 29th. This survey is what qualifies your library to receive funding to purchase items for next year's SRP as well as to receive your 2020 SRP manual. The link to fill it out is: https://forms.gle/4WUgXbejLQ3ypX428. So far, I've had 52 libraries fill it out. Once you hit submit, Google will email you a copy of your results so if you never received that email, I never received your survey! August 29th is also the deadline to submit your parent/caregiver surveys. The top library is each of 4 population tiers will receive additional funds to purchase SRP materials for 2020. So far, I've had 44 libraries return 1,074 surveys which is only 9 fewer than last year! So, keep asking your parents and if you still have paper surveys, please get that info input into SurveyMonkey! It only takes about a minute per survey to input and if you need the instructions, please let me know! The information gathered from these surveys is what part of what I report to the IMLS which is the funding agency for the program so it's important we get as many as possible from libraries of all sizes from all around the state. 44 libraries is great but it is fewer than half of the libraries in New Mexico! I hope your week's are all going quickly and productively! I wanted to share out things that are happening on my end: New STEM to Read Professional Development Workshops Fall 2019 Explora has created a new round of workshops for library staff around the state (if you attended the previous workshops on rocks/soil and space you'll know what to expect) this fall. This batch of workshops have been created to tie into Summer Reading 2020- yes, I know you all JUST finished 2019 and can't even begin to think about next year but the grant that makes these workshops possible ends in October so they have to happen before the grant ends. There will be 3 workshops, each 10-2:30 with a half hour for lunch. They are hands on and you will learn how to hold STEM based programming at your libraries with very little funds needed all around the theme of fairy tales. The dates and locations are: * September 13th @ Taos Public Library * September 25th @ Marshall Memorial Library (Deming) * September 27th @ Portales Public Library For more information and to register (which is required for attendance), please visit The Hitchhiker. CSLP Committees Committees are the lifeblood of CSLP. The hard work and creativity of our volunteers shape both the program and the organization. Strong committee participation leads to a strong CSLP. While the duties vary, committee obligations generally run for one calendar year, and are renewable up to five times. Sign-ups for 2020 are from Aug 12 - Sept 27. All committee work is done virtually; either through email, or through phone or online meetings. Attending the CSLP Annual Meeting is not required. For more information visit: https://www.cslpreads.org/join-a-cslp-committee/ Or sign up for a CSLP Committee today!: https://forms.gle/L5xvNf9Bg4yW2UFK6 If you have any questions regarding a committee, please don't hesitate to contact me! As most of you know, I chair one of the committees and have served on a couple and it has been one of the most rewarding things I've done. CSLP 2023 Themes The deadline to submit ideas for a future theme is coming up on Monday, August 19th. I'll take the 5 most common themes suggested by the library staff of New Mexico and will submit them and then at the CSLP Annual Meeting in September we'll all vote on the theme based on the suggestions that come from the membership (YOU) throughout the country. The link to vote is: https://forms.gle/s2e8wZNrdn4MAjE26. And please share with coworkers, the more voices, the better! The National Book Festival The National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. is coming up on August 31st and I just wanted to let you all know what book New Mexico has chosen to be its book of the year in the Pavilion of States: The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes! This is a book produced under Rick Riordan's imprint at Disney-Hyperion and the author lives in Las Cruces and much of the book takes place outside Tularosa! It's a great read for fans of Percy Jackson! And last but not least, deadline for librarian and parent/caregiver surveys is in 15 days- August 29th! Wasn't it just Monday...? Anyhoo, I just wanted to remind you that today is the deadline to submit theme ideas for Summer Reading 2023! If you have ideas, please submit to https://forms.gle/CWkaiJ2vnAgvKT898. I've been enjoying reading the suggestions as they come in! And just as an FYI, the CSLP will narrow down all the suggestions the State Reps (people like me) submit, then all the State Reps will vote on the top suggestions at our Annual Meeting next year. What I've done the past few years is share out the top suggestions in the Youth Services Facebook group and vote based on what YOU would like to see! So, if you're not a member of the group let me know! (I also did a few SRP giveaways over there this summer.) Next week (August 29th) is the deadline to submit your librarian survey! If you want to participate in SRP 2020 you must fill out the librarian survey! So far, I have 65 libraries and usually get around 90 so there's still a lot of you who have not filled it out! This is one of the last reminders I'll send so, PLEASE fill it out- this is data that I report to the IMLS which is the federal funding agency of the program so this information (as well as the info gathered in parent surveys) is of vital importance! The link to fill it out is: https://forms.gle/4WUgXbejLQ3ypX428. The deadline to submit your parents surveys is also next week! So far, I've had 48 libraries submit 1184 surveys which is 101 more surveys than last year!! You all have blown past my expectations but I'd love to see even more and get a few more libraries to submit. Last year, we had 51 libraries submit and so far 11 of those haven't submitted this year, which means we've had a lot of new libraries return their parent surveys but I'd love to see those 11 libraries submit too! Remember, I've broken the state into 4 population tiers and the library with the most surveys returned in their tier gets an additional $50 added to their voucher! And last but not least, I have a giveaway! I think most of the state is back in school by now and I have some back to school goodies to give to one library. All those that email me (not the whole listserv) by noon today, August 19th, just to tell me you've read my email will be entered in to win and I'll let the NPN have its fun! Have a great week and let me know if you have questions about anything! I hope you're all well on this Tuesday morning! I just wanted to give you all a reminder about the upcoming STEM to Read workshops held by Explora. We'll be holding 3 workshops next month to tie into Summer Reading 2020. I know it's super early but the grant that pays for these workshops ends in October so they have to be done by the grant deadline. These are really great, useful workshops that give you easy programming ideas using the theme and without spending a lot of money. The day ends with creating an activity tied into a storybook (that you then get to keep at the end of the day) using some of the ideas and concepts you've learned that day. Explora has been planning this for a couple years and have managed to figure out a way to tie STEM concepts into fairytales and I think it's going to be a lot of fun! These workshops are free to attend and will be held: * September 13th 10-2:30 @ Taos Public Library * September 25th 10-2:30 @ Marshall Memorial Library (Deming) * September 27th 10-2:30 @ Portales Public Library Registration is required to attend, so please register at: https://forms.gle/qud4vjJ8aPByYwuWA. And if your library is interested in receiving a copy of the parent surveys from this summer (in an excel spreadsheet) that are in reference to your library and your program, please let me know! I've had several libraries ask and I have a list going but am happy to run it for any library that is interested! It won't be until after it closes so sometime next week or the week after.
