Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

The New Mexico Library for the Blind and Print Disabled (LBPD) provides free audio book, magazine, and braille service along with book and braille playback devices to eligible citizens statewide via Free Matter mailing and Internet download. The library provides phone, email, and online support and access to an audio book collection of over 150,000 titles along with over 20,000 braille titles and a similar number of audio magazine issues. Why does the job exist?
This position provides Reader Advisory support to about 2,500 blind, visually impaired, and print disabled individuals throughout New Mexico as well as institutions serving these eligible persons. LBPD is a member of a nationwide network affiliated with the National Library Service of the Library of Congress that provides audio and braille book and magazine services via direct mail and download options. https://nmstatelibrary.org/lbpd/about-us/

How does it get done?
The Reader Advisor (RA) processes and maintains the currency of new and established applications, handles ingoing and outgoing patron transfers, and responds to library user requests and questions via phone, e-mail, fax and in person. This position troubleshoots technical issues such as those related to book player use and the downloading of books; assists with the selection of new titles and developing of patron preferences; and coordinates book delivery, and performs other related, needed tasks in coordination with fellow staff in the fulfillment of overall quality services.

Who are the customers?
This position serves eligible blind, physically disabled and reading impaired citizens throughout New Mexico along with institutions, such as public schools and nursing facilities, serving such citizens.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have one (1) or more years of customer service experience working via phone, email, fax and directly with persons. An interest in or working knowledge of book and magazine literature would be suitable along with some college experience. Candidate should have working knowledge of computer use, including Office 365 applications and computer databases. Knowledge and use of mobile devices related to audio book and braille download is an asset.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and one and one half (1.5) years of relevant experience. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.  Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with extensive personal computer, telephone, printer, scanner, and other technology usage with extended periods of sitting and standing. Should be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
