Shereena is pursuing her Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies at UNM, drawing from her extensive academic background, including a Master's in Indigenous Studies and a Bachelor's in American Indian Studies.
What will the Brown Bag entail?
Abstract of presentation: The critical shortage of Native American teachers in New Mexico presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. This research explores characteristics of an effective teacher recruitment model tailored to meet the specific needs of rural Indigenous communities. The presentation will focus on the systemic process for evaluating cultural, social, and educational characteristics of an effective recruitment model that is built on respecting tribal educational sovereignty and community voice. The findings advocate for teacher preparation programs to adopt culturally responsive approaches to support Indigenous education and holistic support that aims to cultivate a pipeline of educators who can positively impact their communities.
