The report is an in-depth look at how IMLS aligns its strategic priorities with practice. The APR reviews key impacts of the agency?s activities for FY 2023. Highlights from the report include: * IMLS completed the pilot phase of the National Museum Survey (NMS), the first-ever annual federal survey to gather and share data about the essential work happening across the country in museums and cultural institutions. The effort has secured the future of the NMS, set to launch in early 2025. ? * As part of IMLS?s continued IMLS 250 activities in recognition of America?s semiquincentennial, the agency partnered with PBS Books and Detroit Public Television to create a streaming series called ?Visions of America: All Stories, All People, All Places.? For the series? first season, the team produced three episodes that explore the history and stories in Miami, Seattle, and Kansas City that have contributed to America as we know it today. * Under the President?s United We Stand initiative, IMLS was entrusted with the responsibility of developing a federal Information Literacy Taskforce focused on the trusted local institutions we serve to reinforce their existing community information networks and the best practices of civic institutions. In response to both Congress and the White House, IMLS is working to launch a community-centered program to address misunderstandings and support literacy and education in many areas, from finance, health, and climate to civic engagement and public safety. * Under the National Museum of the American Latino Act, IMLS awarded more than $4 million to eight institutions through the agency?s new American Latino Museum Internship and Fellowship Initiative (ALMIFI). ALMIFI is designed to strengthen the institutional capacity of the American Latino Museum community and provide opportunities for internships and fellowships at American Latino museums for students enrolled in institutions of higher education, including Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). * IMLS developed the Agency?s first Learning Agenda in a published report ?Learning Agenda: Research Questions to Guide IMLS Priorities, FY 2023?2026.? This is a research initiative that aims to deliver on IMLS?s mission to advance, support, and empower America?s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development. For more information about IMLS?s activities in FY 2023, the full report is available on the?IMLS website. IMLS released its FY 2023 Annual Financial Report in November. View this email online. Shereena is pursuing her Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies at UNM, drawing from her extensive academic background, including a Master's in Indigenous Studies and a Bachelor's in American Indian Studies. What will the Brown Bag entail? Abstract of presentation: The critical shortage of Native American teachers in New Mexico presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. This research explores characteristics of an effective teacher recruitment model tailored to meet the specific needs of rural Indigenous communities. The presentation will focus on the systemic process for evaluating cultural, social, and educational characteristics of an effective recruitment model that is built on respecting tribal educational sovereignty and community voice. The findings advocate for teacher preparation programs to adopt culturally responsive approaches to support Indigenous education and holistic support that aims to cultivate a pipeline of educators who can positively impact their communities. A substantial portion of the funding ? $7 million ? will be distributed in grants of $10,000 and $20,000 to small and rural libraries. In collaboration with the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL), LTC offers grants to qualifying libraries across the country with a population under 25,000 and located at least five miles from an urbanized area, aligning with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) definitions of small and rural libraries. Libraries use the funding to increase the accessibility of facilities, services and programs to better serve people with disabilities. Joe Sabatini, Co-Chair NMLA Legislation Committee We share a message from the ALA Public Policy & Advocacy Office Last Chance to #FundLibraries in FY2024 ? ALA Public Policy & Advocacy Office imanager at alawash.org via cmail20.com Librarians on Capitol Hill need your help! Hello advocate! Congress is racing to avoid a government shutdown and pass a final FY24 budget. In the coming days, legislators will face hard decisions on which programs to maintain funding for ? and which ones to cut. Now, it's our last chance to make our voices heard before Congress finalizes the budget: Tell Congress to #FundLibraries before the Deadline! https://oneclickpolitics.global.ssl.fastly.net/messages/edit?promo_id=19803 To recap where we?ve been in the appropriations process: first, the President proposed a budget for fiscal year 2024. Next, the House and Senate will each draft their versions of appropriations bills. Thanks to your advocacy, dozens of Congressmembers signed on to support funding for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), Innovative Approaches to Literacy program (IAL), and library facilities. Since then, Congress has continued to keep government funding steady without passing a full budget - but their newest deadline is March 22. It's time to speak up one last time in this budget cycle and make sure that Congress hears the message loud and clear: #FundLibraries in the FY24 budget! Speak Up for Library Funding! Learn more about the campaign ? and find tools to share this action ? at ALA?s #FundLibraries homepage. Thank you for all you do for libraries! Wellbeing is multidimensional- including physical and mental health, economic security, school effectiveness, cultural engagement, political voice, etc. It amounts to people having what economist Amartya Sen describes as "the freedom to lead lives [people] have reason to value." By August of 2024, this project will publish tools for library service valuation based in library worker and community member perceptions and experiences, as well as comprehensive statistical analysis. Our general timeline is below. Get Project Updates To learn more about the national team working on this project, visit People. Message-ID: Directors, The good news is that your 2022 GO Bond Grant Agreements will start going out today. The Agreements will be sent directly to you via DocuSign. I send a BIG THANK YOU to Carmelita Aragon who provided the needed expertise w/DocuSign. These Agreements are set up for electronic signatures. Once you receive the Agreement, if you are not the authorized agent to electronically sign, please use the ASSIGN TO SOMEONE ELSE feature within DocuSign. This can be found under OTHER ACTIONS once you click REVIEW DOCUMENT. An authorized agent is generally a mayor, or the head of City Council or perhaps the Finance Director of the City/Town Hall. It needs to be someone authorized to sign an Agreement w/the State of New Mexico. Once the authorized person electronically signs the Agreement, it will automatically be forwarded to the next person in line - in this case, that will be the State Librarian, Eli Guinnee. Once all signatures are obtained, DocuSign will send you, the director, a fully executed Grant Agreement and you can send copies on to whomever may need them. I've attached the public libraries spreadsheet and the tribal public libraries spreadsheet denoting your 2022 GOB allocations. For both public and tribal public libraries, your allocations are approximately twice that of your 2020 GOBs. The Legislators and voters approved the 2022 GO Bonds at twice the amount of the 2020 GO Bonds. Cassandra ALA Releases Free Library Programming Guide, Resources to Help Adult Patrons Understand the Unseen Aspects of the Internet * Wed, 03/27/2024 * * CHICAGO ? What determines the information that shows up in online search results? How do cookies work? What exactly is an algorithm? The new free guide from the American Library Association (ALA), developed with a team of national advisors, will help library workers assist adults in understanding how the internet works and how it impacts their lives. ?Media Literacy for Adults: Architecture of the Internet Programming Guide? contains background information, recommended collection materials and program ideas on topics like misinformation; artificial intelligence; ChatGPT; civics; search engine optimization; and more. The 27-page guide also explores ways to help novice patrons with library technology and how to teach media literacy in everyday library services. Download the guide here. In the guide, library workers may explore library program spotlights such as: * Interactive programs to teach disinformation through a ?Disinformation Crime Scene? * Innovative trainings and workshops to teach artificial intelligence through ChatGPT and Shakespeare plays * Documentary screenings and discussions on media literacy topics The materials in the guide were created for out-of-school adult audiences whom library workers will generally meet in a public library context. However, many of the approaches and best practices explored are equally appropriate for a classroom or other library settings. The authors of the guide will present a series of free webinars to coincide with its major themes and ideas. To stay informed about webinar dates and registration, sign up for the Programming Librarian e-newsletter. ?Media Literacy for Adults: Architecture of the Internet Programming Guide? was created in collaboration with talented thought leaders from the library and media literacy sectors, including Jimmeka Anderson, Ph.D., I AM not the Media, Inc.; Spencer Brayton of Waubonsee Community College (Illinois); Kristen Calvert of Dallas (Texas) Public Library; Anna Kozlowska-Barrios, Ph.D. of the University of Illinois; Micheal A. Spikes, Ph.D. of Northwestern University?s Medill School of Journalism (Illinois); and Monya Tomlinson of Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library (Georgia). Media Literacy Education in Libraries for Adult Audiences is a project conducted by the ALA Public Programs Office in collaboration with Knology, a nonprofit research organization that produces practical social science for a better world. It was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services grant number LG-13-19-0089-19. About the American Library Association The American Library Association (ALA) is the foremost national organization providing resources to inspire library and information professionals to transform their communities through essential programs and services. For more than 140 years, the ALA has been the trusted voice for academic, public, school, government and special libraries, advocating for the profession and the library?s role in enhancing learning and ensuring access to information for all.
