Pardon cross posting…

Good Morning Library Directors!

We would love to have a great turnout of supporters for HB123 tomorrow; if you and your supporters are within close driving range of Santa Fe we would love to see you in person!

This bill will allow librarians to do their job without fear of special interest groups interfering. In its first hearing last week, we heard some pretty troubling accusations against librarians, and I would love to have as many supporters on hand to affirm that New Mexico’s librarians know their communities and work to provide unbiased access for ALL community members.

House Bill 123, PROHIBIT LIBRARY BOOK BANNING<https://nmlegis.gov/Sessins/24%20Regular/bills/house/HB0123.pdf>
This is being heard tomorrow, Wednesday, first on the agenda at 8:30am Room 309 at the Roundhouse.

If you have any questions about the bill at all, please call my cell phone today: 505-629-9153. If I am not able to answer, leave a message and I’ll call you back.

You will have a chance to raise your hand in support of the bill, and if you would like you will likely have a minute to say a few words about why the bill is important to you.

Free parking is available in the garage on the West side of the Capitol and in the parking lot on the East side. These usually fill up by 8am, so I would try to get there by 7:45 at the latest (breakfast and coffee is available inside the Roundhouse at the café by the West entrance).

Thanks in advance for your support! Let me know if any questions!
Eli

P.S. Zoom link<https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84200839142> is below--if you cannot attend on such short notice, please do attend by Zoom! Be prepared to Raise your Virtual Hand when the chair asks who is in favor.

House Taxation & Revenue Committee heard HB 308, the General Obligations Bonds bill yesterday, and gave it a "do pass" recommendation on a 10-0 vote.

The webcast is at:
https://sg001-harmony.sliq.net/00293/Harmony/en/PowerBrowser/PowerBrowserV2/20240205/-1/74652

Bill sponsor Rep. Derrick Lente summarizes the bill at 8:38:40. In addition to the usual three bond issues for senior centers, libraries and academic buildings, a fourth bond issue will provide $10 million for a buildout of the state's public safety radio communications system. Public comment begins at 8:41:00; with State Librarian Eli Guinnee giving a short statement in support of the library bond issue. Committee questions begin at 8:42:45. There is in-depth questioning about the public safety radio communications system and how it could be funded. The motion for a "do pass" recommendation is made at 8:57:20, and it passes on a unanimous 10-0 vote.

HB 308 now goes to the House floor for consideration. It is on the House "Temporary Calendar"

FLOOR ACTION

House Bill 134, as twice amended, the Tribal Education Trust Fund, received a "do pass" recommendation from the House Appropriations and Finance Committee on a 13-2 vote. It is item 11 on the House "Third Reading" Calendar for Tuesday, February 6th.
