Director's Corner
I hope your new year is off to a great start. We've reached the midway point in New Mexico's 30-day legislative session and the team is hard at work monitoring the impact of relevant legislation as well as advocating for proposed laws to streamline our operations and facilitate our mission.
We appreciate the support of our partners, community members and stakeholders. If you have questions about broadband legislation, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
Best,
Drew Lovelace, Acting Director

Along with industry partners, federal agency representatives and community advocates, Acting Director Lovelace and members of the OBAE team recently spearheaded the Second Annual Broadband Day at the Roundhouse on January 24. Broadband Day raises awareness about the critical efforts taking place among state, federal, industry, Tribal, and community partners in New Mexico to ensure widespread Internet access.
Thanks to State Representatives Natalie Figueroa, Joy Garratt and Debra Sariñana, broadband champs in their own right, who presented along with Acting Director Lovelace, the "broadband jedi awards" to several New Mexico broadband champions for their incredible work in advancing the cause of universal connectivity in New Mexico, including:
Kimball Sekaquaptewa, TBCP Project Director, Santa Fe Indian School
Catherine Nicolaou, Broadband Program Manager, City of Albuquerque
Eli Guinnee, New Mexico State Librarian
Jerry Smith, Broadband Manager, Los Alamos County
Godfrey Enjady, General Manager, Mescalero Apache Telecom
Stephine Poston, Owner, Poston & Associates and OBAE Tribal Liaison
Ovidiu Viorica, Broadband & Technology Manager, OBAE Broadband Development & Connectivity Program
[https://files.constantcontact.com/a6495a75901/6e6977ae-af25-4962-8135-c23f289b0616.jpg]
Thanks to the many people who helped make Broadband Day a tremendous success, including the OBAE staff, the Connect New Mexico Council and Working Groups, Community Engagement and Education Coordinator Jennifer Nevarez and Community Learning Network, Photographer Journey Esposito of Thresholds & Wonders Photography, Media Teams from Santa Fe Community College and True Kids 1, former OBAE Director Kelly Schlegel and Bill Schlegel, and all the folks who showed up to help us celebrate.
You Can (and Should) Still Challenge the Maps!
There are three important map challenges scheduled or underway. It is critically important to correct any data that may be inaccurate indicating internet coverage as portrayed within the maps for funding to be spent in an effective manner to achieve meaningful broadband access for those who need it most, including the unserved and underserved in New Mexico.
Please note the following important dates:

What You Need to Know About the Federal Affordable Connectivity Program Wind-Down
According to the FCC, without additional funding from Congress, the allotted $14.2 billion to fund the ACP is projected to run out in April 2024 (this date is an estimate and may change). As a result, the FCC has begun taking steps to wind down the ACP, which means:
• ACP applications and enrollments will not be processed after February 7, 2024 at 11:59 PM ET.
• Households who have applied, been approved, and are receiving the monthly internet discount before February 8, 2024 will continue to receive their ACP benefit until ACP funds run out, as long as the household remains enrolled in the program.
• After the ACP funds run out (projected in April 2024), households participating in the ACP will no longer receive the ACP discounts.
If you want to learn more about what you can do to support continuation of the ACP, go to dontdisconnectus.org<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Y2ian2k0IDK9DZvN4Lxa6gI6IFM_aCk5vALmuOT-AMLA-KxUx_mF_h_it2LpGsAY0imeCP4BOeT85ImX0aJeNzDGQX-eajtNXa3GgNA_VLdPRzisPX_fBU-4fuNSiBnyUxp27xhj_-88adYMzeCaEdLpA8cIK8kV&c=HnVUrzsk-QzMJzHbTj1qfYGxTlbN1nugINpJHgmqcK0Hga1uCy7zXA==&ch=xluk2z0RJOkFDOlJdXpyXLknFIdjqu-4K9m8N1T-jhEhMJVpXVSduA==>. While New Mexico's congressional delegation is in favor of an extension, you can review resources on the site to identify opportunities to advocate for continuation of this federal program.

Through his work with the State of New Mexico he has also developed skillsets in budget and contract management, procurement, and HR. Outside of work Angelo has devoted his life to literature.
