Highlights from NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson’s
February Activities

This month, Chair Jackson joined NEH Chair Shelly C. Lowe to visit Puerto Rico from February 17-19 to listen to arts and cultural organizations about the work they are doing and determine how the two organizations can best support Puerto Rico’s arts and culture sector. This is the first trip by an NEA chair since 1994’s trip by Chair Jane Alexander. In an interview with El Nuevo Día<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0013ir8kv3wSpA6vX04TEg4End-MlNYzLTmj9eH75l0ZKsIEi6pg_jNthYQzkynEN49JmJPnAokXAiRvwseBogxjMH_DTFrXwC5kX3ucD8GWxAnfZZp3Cd-ThdYFmqyGooHffo_moSfkpqM3jchwrhT_qkxoDNoGhsIY5DTwqXV-eYIAM8ZMUU7GEDRLPLh8K_iQ6bPGb86bW5GJg4LSMOSuu5Az0CL3Humf7Cwx3TXN4K6YS7bFclCkWGisQx2zX_X4uU8v9VsBDlhEg1a4nsFMODBOwnL0MJpmhFHhcb7M2s=&c=SywG_PqfFx0SkXIvJPyxUWtVhdzr-4VA0RkVYoX-kxIj6DRqgqvTYw==&ch=rKUsGI1dQ_uHTYJ2E_oJKSDAD9Kkj2nPC4tRUxD3RoPOxbkWz1Hq3g==>, Chair Jackson said:

(“I would say that it brings us a better understanding of how we can be more helpful, how we can be more relevant and responsive, understanding the specific circumstances of Puerto Rico. We also want to understand what work we have done so far and get a better idea of its impact. I have a particular interest in understanding the role of the arts in relation to quality of life, health, communities, and economic development. The arts do not exist in a bubble, they permeate all of that, so understanding how that happens here and how we can support it is very important.”)

(“We are extremely grateful for the visit of both chairs and we are pleased that they personally know the ecosystem of arts, culture and humanities in Puerto Rico. It is the first time that both positions meet in Puerto Rico and for us this historic meeting is very important because it gives them a better perception of the artistic and cultural management of Puerto Ricans. Through the grants awarded to individual artists and organizations with events that promote our arts and culture, we have been able to support the artistic class and cultural managers in their various disciplines.”)

Also in February, Chair Jackson shared her perspective of one year in this position as well as plans for the future of the NEA in a podcast interview:

“I think unleashing the full power of art requires animating the work at the intersection of other dimensions of our lives, so arts in education, arts in community development, economic development, climate, the very important work happening at the intersection of arts and health and well-being. I've been referring to the necessary integration of arts in our daily lives and to the integration of arts in other areas of policy and practice as arts in all, so arts in all refers to the intention of full integration of the arts in how we live. Not only does the concept push up against the relegation of arts as something separate or just extra, but we're also leaning into arts integration that will create new opportunities and unlock resources for artists and arts organizations.”

ARP Grant Spotlight: Richmond CultureWorks (Richmond, VA)

“I was worried because when things get tough, arts and culture is often one of the first things that localities might cut investments in. But arts and culture are a big part of what makes Richmond what it is, and we saw individuals, businesses, foundations and even most of our localities continuing to invest in arts and culture.” –Scott Garka, President of Richmond CultureWorks

A Conversation with Choreographer Kyle Abraham

"I wanted to, in some ways, make work that was very much from my perspective connecting to different aspects of my background, albeit either my background in playing classical music or growing up within hip hop and rave culture. It’s kind of one and the same, but I wanted that to find its way in a dance company setting."

In this podcast, Kyle Abraham, acclaimed choreographer and company director, discusses his dance company A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, which creates work that draws from Black history and culture as well as Abraham's personal experiences as a gay Black man, and how he finds his own joy through choreography and teaching.

Changes Coming to NEA REACH Login

As of January 31, a Login.gov username and password is now required to access the NEA's eGMS REACH system by grantees and panelists. Login.gov is a secure sign‐in service used by the public to log in to various government websites (including Grants.gov, SAM.gov, and USAJOBS). Many grantees will already have a Login.gov account that they used to sign in to Grants.gov to submit their application. That same login can now be used to access eGMS REACH to upload award paperwork, make payment requests, or submit final reports. For more information, to confirm your current REACH account will work with Login.gov, and steps to create a Login.gov account, you can visit the NEA’s eGMS REACH login page<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0013ir8kv3wSpA6vX04TEg4End-MlNYzLTmj9eH75l0ZKsIEi6pg_jNtlBrR1_6RSNjx6pSAroFK2712Fw-GW3iKR4T_5aFYQUwGF6-ykjsLq2FT5q-rxlgGvFw6gmbzJT5pri1IZyESmZOhs15aeiRYPjNvA_Xt_Q61NdVWhCU9kU=&c=SywG_PqfFx0SkXIvJPyxUWtVhdzr-4VA0RkVYoX-kxIj6DRqgqvTYw==&ch=rKUsGI1dQ_uHTYJ2E_oJKSDAD9Kkj2nPC4tRUxD3RoPOxbkWz1Hq3g==>.
