Mellon Foundation, the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums has launched a national initiative to provide support for Native communities seeking the return of culturally significant materials. The "Going Home Fund: Returning Material Culture to Native Communities" is led by a national council of Native repatriation specialists, museum professionals, and attorneys. During its inaugural year, the Going Home Fund will: * Provide financial support for tribal communities seeking the return of culturally significant items. Funds may be used to cover the actual cost of shipping, packaging, insurance, and other expenses necessary to facilitate the return, display, and care of the objects. * Strengthen the capacity of tribal museums to seek loans and gifts by providing training and resources. * Build connections between tribal communities and non-Native collecting institutions and collectors/individuals. * Serve as a conduit for individual donors or organizations wishing to return items. * Establish a network of appraisers, attorneys, and other professionals who can lend their support to facilitating returns. If you would like to join ATALM and the Mellon Foundation in our efforts to ensure the cultural continuity of Native peoples, please use this contribution form or contact president at atalm.org With all best wishes, W. IMLS received 39 applications through the Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services program requesting $4.9 million in funds. "The Native American and Native Hawaiian grants announced today will help these institutions support the wellbeing of their communities, educate people on cultural traditions, and preserve their important historical collections," said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. "We are honored to support the great work they are doing to engage communities and make these cultural riches available." A list of all projects funded is available in the awarded grants search. Examples include: * Hui Mauli Ola will partner with Native Hawaiian healing masters to ethically gather, store, organize, curate, and make accessible documents and resources pertaining to traditional Native Hawaiian healing practices via a digital archive. Project activities include developing protocols for ethical data stewardship determined by the Native Hawaiian healing community; collecting and digitizing materials for inclusion in the database; and developing and publishing the digital archive. The project will establish a foundational system of documenting and tracing Native Hawaiian traditional healing knowledge while increasing Native Hawaiian archival infrastructure capacity, benefiting students, the community of Hawai?i, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders. * The Ilanka Cultural Center will further its mission to educate its community and visitors while perpetuating the traditions, skills, and cultures of the Native Village of Eyak by creating six children's picture books depicting traditional Eyak and Chugach legends. Project staff will hire six Tribal artists to provide illustrations for the legends and will oversee design and publication of approximately 450 copies of the books. The published books will be made available at the Cultural Center, as well as disseminated free of cost throughout the community, including to Tribal households with youth and the Cordova Public Library. As a result of this project, Tribal families will have a new engaging medium for passing down oral traditional knowledge and Tribal artists? work will be supported and showcased. * Elk Valley Rancheria will improve the care, management, and long-term preservation of its collection of ethnographic items, lithics and stone tools, documents, and books. Drawing on recommendations from a 2015 conservation survey and assessment, the Tribe will purchase and install museum quality display cases that protect the collections from changes in temperature, relative humidity, and ultraviolet light. Housing the Tribe?s cultural materials, which include over 100 historical baskets, in new cases will preserve them for future generations and enable both Native and non-Native members of the surrounding community to continue to visit and learn about the lifeways, values, and history of Elk Valley Rancheria. More information about museum grant opportunities can be found on the IMLS website. ? Best, Eli June 14, 2023 Hello from Read to Me! Literacy Network Dear Librarian, Once again Read to Me! Literacy Network is the operations partner of the annual "KOAT Children's Book Drive". We are a small group of volunteers dedicated to encouraging parents/caregivers to read to infants from the earliest possible moment. Your optional participation as a drop-off location for donations of new or gently used children's books between July 10- 30th will be important to the success of this effort. If you would like your library to participate as a collection site, please send a message to bookdrive66 at gmail.com. After July 30th you will have the choice to: 1. distribute the donated books to nearby groups who support Early Childhood initiatives or any individuals who would like them. Please keep a tally of how many books are given to whom. 1. Keep the books for use by your library. Again, keep a tally for feedback to KOAT and Read to Me! 1. Send a message to us at Bookdrive66 at gmail.com to schedule a pick-up for the number of boxes of children's books waiting for us. Once all the participating libraries have sent the email with their preference, Read to Me! will create a "best-effort" plan for what may well be statewide road trips. If there is a certain urgency to pick up your books, please give us as much advance notice as possible. If you have further questions about the Book Drive, please call Sherri Trujillo, Local Sales Manager, KOAT-TV at 505-263-2824 or email strujillo at hearst.com. If you have questions about the disposition of the books as described above or need to make any changes to your previous instructions, please call Dave Orner, Coordinator, Read to Me! at 505-681-6325. KOAT does not bear the responsibility to make Pick-Up trips. Best, Eli _________________________________________ From: Gallup, Amber , HED Sent: Tuesday, June 6, 2023 2:07 PM In just a couple weeks, we are having a "Roadshow" - a group of people who will be traveling to five sites across the state for a week. Each site will have a 2-hour community-based information session at a local college about the offerings of Adult Education and particularly about the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). This program is an alternative to the GED and HiSET tests and now authorized in the State of New Mexico - it's competency-based (instead of standardized test-based) and allows clients to earn an "adult diploma" which in some contexts is a little different than a high school equivalency like the GED or HiSET will allow them to earn. It's a good opportunity for many, and we have an online hub that allows people to work toward this degree without leaving their homes... or their library, where they have internet access. And it's all completely free to students and to the institutions that provide support to these clients (and this can include libraries). I'd really like to invite library staff in each of these communities to these events, and I'd also like to ask that the flyers be made available in libraries for patrons who may be interested. I figure that the library staff may also know the staff of local literacy volunteers who would be interested in attending to learn more and also who have access to the populations who would most benefit from the NEDP. Generous funding from the Mellon Foundation is covering the full cost of travel and associated fees for all participants. I started using GIS in graduate school at UNM in the early 90?s. At UNM, I was the assistant zoologist for Natural Heritage New Mexico, the research branch of The Nature Conservancy, where I mapped threatened and endangered species occurrences such as warm spring snails and the Mexican spotted owl. The GIS was an analytical tool for development of species and habitat management plans as well as recommending to TNC lands most appropriate for their conservation focus. What is your favorite part of your job? Favorite part of my job is building tools that help people, from management to the general public, understand their world better. What is your advice for someone new? Advice for someone new: Pay attention to the details. People tend to look at a map or analysis outcome as ?truth? without necessarily understanding or questioning your methods. However, if you start with bad assumptions or inaccurate data, or your methods are imprecise, you can very quickly conflate results and/or be outright wrong. Geographic Information Systems can be creative and artistic, and are very tied to information technology, but the field is a science and needs to be treated as such. CONDOLENCES FROM OBAE DIRECTOR, KELLY SCHLEGEL: I am saddened to hear about the passing of Joe Garcia. As a leader, he exemplified strength, wisdom, and compassion. His insights and unwavering determination will be missed. He was a beacon of hope and a voice for those who needed it, preserving the rich cultural heritage of Native American communities. He also was the keystone in ensuring Ohkay Owingeh was able to get broadband. In his passing, we are reminded of the immense impact he had on the lives he touched. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, and his remarkable contributions will be remembered and cherished. _______________ I extend my deepest sympathies to the friends and loved ones as they mourn the tragic loss of Steve Metts. Steve served as the CEO of Valley TeleCom leading the cooperative to a strong financial position and driving innovation to meet the communication needs of its members. Most recently Steve, along with the Board and Management Team, worked in expanding Valley?s fiber network into rural southeastern AZ and southwestern New Mexico. He also served as President of the New Mexico Exchange Carrier Group for 17 years. He was a knowledgeable and lovely person who will be sorely missed by so many. In the news: 1. Are you a researcher excited about supporting Indigenous rights in your data and publications? Do you want to know how the Local Contexts Notices help researchers to disclose Indigenous interests? This webinar will focus on how the Notices can be used to create pathways for partnership and collaboration, and support Indigenous cultural authority and data sovereignty. Hear about the use of the Notices from three researchers working in and with archives, environmental sampling, biodiversity, genetics, and science communication. This webinar is for researchers from various fields and experience levels. Some familiarity with the Local Contexts system of Notices and Labels will be helpful, but researchers at all stages of experience with Local Contexts are welcome. This will be the first webinar in a series for researchers. Register here: Researcher Webinar ? Local Contexts What are the Notices? The Notices are tools for institutions and researchers to identify Indigenous collections and data and recognize Indigenous rights and interests. The Notices were developed to create pathways for partnership, collaboration, and support of Indigenous cultural authority. Notices can be applied to websites, publications, datasets, museum exhibitions, items in a collection, genetic samples, and more. Institutions and researchers can generate Notices using the Local Contexts Hub. There are three categories of Notices: Engagement, Disclosure, and Collections Care Notices.
