Please join us online as we continue our monthly series as members of the Institute for American Indian Education (IAIE) at University of New Mexico and partners talk about their research and current work related to educator preparation, language and culture, leadership, and other topics related to Indigenous education. Time will be available for questions after presentations.  Series will be held online every 4th Thursday of the month from 1 P.M to 2 P.M MT. What’s happening this month?

On Thursday, February 16th, the brown bag series will feature Dr. Wendy S. Greyeyes, (Diné), an Assistant Professor of Native American Studies. She formerly served as the tribal liaison for the Arizona Governor, a Grassroots Manager for the Indian Self Reliance Initiative in Arizona, a Statistician/Demographer for the Department of Diné Education, a Chief Implementation Officer for the Bureau of Indian Education, and a research consultant for the Department of Diné Education. She is the Navajo representative for New Mexico Indian Education Advisory Council, President of the American Indian Studies Association (AISA), and faculty advisor for the Kiva Club. She received her M.A./Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and B.A. from Stanford University.

What will the Brown Bag entail?

A History of Navajo Nation Education: Disentangling Our Sovereign Body unravels the tangle of federal and state education programs that have been imposed on Navajo people and illuminates the ongoing efforts by tribal communities to transfer state authority over Diné education to the Navajo Nation. On the heels of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Department of Diné Education, this important education history explains how the current Navajo educational system is a complex terrain of power relationships, competing agendas, and jurisdictional battles influenced by colonial pressures and tribal resistance. An iron grip of colonial domination over Navajo education remains, thus inhibiting a unified path toward educational sovereignty. In providing the historical roots to today’s challenges, Dr. Greyeyes clears the path and provides a go-to reference to move discussions forward.
