The Institute of American Indian Arts Land-Grant Program has received a SW Climate Hub grant to offer a Train-the-Trainer course: Introduction to Beekeeping & Pollinator Stewardship for Indigenous Stewards.



This course will run for 7 months. This training course is focused on guiding and encouraging facilitators working in Tribal communities or with Indigenous organizations who have an interest in serving as information and teaching liaisons. This course will be limited to a 12-person max cohort and, for those who successfully complete the course, will provide initial beekeeping equipment for them to get established in their locales.

IAIA is delivering an Introduction to Beekeeping and Pollinator stewardship for Indigenous Stewards program series. The cohort will be selected based on their applications and interest in serving as a lead for their tribal community/organization.  The course will follow a Train-the-Trainer/Guide-the-Mentor process to encourage each participant to become more familiar and comfortable in sharing information with others.



Class topics include:

  *   Focus on apiculture- the study of bees
  *   Bee biology and physiology
  *   Connection to habitat and forage
  *   Pollinator ecology: land and water stewardship through an Indigenous lens
  *   Holistic management
  *   Harvestable hive medicines
  *   Bee & Pollinator arts





Timeline:



Mid-August 2023    Announcement with application link advertised.

Mid-September      Applications due

Oct-Dec                   Weekly online course: 1.5 hours for each class  (Tuesday afternoons)

April- July 2024        Monthly webinar start: 1.5 hours (in person for participants in range; livestream for those at a distance).

Class 4:          October 24: Following the Bloom: The Forage-Nutrition Connection





Class 5:          November 7: Navigating the Seasonal Compass: Environment-Behavior-

                                                 Management Calendar



Class 6:          November 14: Nurturing the Matriarchy: Hive styles and Beekeeping

    Equipment options



Class 7:          November 21: Harvesting Hive Medicines- Apitherapy



Class 8:          December 5:   Bee Arts- Encaustic, Sculptural, and uses of wax



* Those who have attended 6/8 of the classes live will receive a printed manual before winter break.





2024 Schedule: Hands-on/Apiary livestream



Class 9:          April 2:           Apiary preparation & hive installation steps

Feeding bees



Class 10:        May 7:           Spring management: adding space, catching swarms



Class 11:        June 18:        Summer management; pest & disease control



Class 12:        July 30:          Mid-summer harvest; Fall & Winter preparation





* Each applicant who successfully completes the program will then be eligible to receive start up equipment for establishing a teaching apiary in their tribal community (Note: the course end date will allow for applicants to receive their equipment in the fall of 2025 and to prepare their apiary sites in time to receive bees for spring 2025).



**A follow up webinar and check-in can be offered May 2025. And if additional funding received, participate in a subsequent Intermediate Beekeeping course.
