Dear Cassandra,
We are writing today to invite you to join ATALM’s newly formed Tribal Library Council (TLC). It is free to join and comes with multiple benefits. Of special note, if you join in 2023, you will be recognized as a Founding Member. To join, use this application form.<https://atalm.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1b5fd0b3926b2a0236f0325a1&id=46cb1baf55&e=009ae9317d>
TLC membership, while targeted to tribal librarians, is open to everyone with an interest in helping tribal libraries thrive, including funders, MLIS students, supporting state and federal agency staff, library vendors, and others. Our intention is to build a dynamic network of support.
As background, the TLC is an outcome of the 2020 Tribal Library Needs Assessment<https://atalm.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1b5fd0b3926b2a0236f0325a1&id=c8aeea995d&e=009ae9317d> that studied the unique challenges of tribal libraries. To address the identified needs, an all-volunteer Tribal Library Council Leadership Team<https://atalm.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1b5fd0b3926b2a0236f0325a1&id=4e0c0437e2&e=009ae9317d> prioritized eight tangible Action Items:
1. Establish an inclusive Tribal Library Council to facilitate the Action Items.
1. Organize monthly online gatherings that offer training, spotlight tribal library achievements, announce funding opportunities, and introduce new products and services.
1. Provide self-directed opportunities for tribal library staff to gain skills and knowledge through free online tools and resources delivered through a dedicated web page on the ATALM site.
1. Ensure in-person training programs are responsive to the needs of tribal libraries through the appointment of a dedicated Tribal Library Program Committee. The Committee will also be responsible for hosting social gatherings and networking opportunities for tribal librarians at ATALM's annual conferences.
1. Elevate the stature of tribal libraries by identifying and disseminating information about innovative programs and services.
1. Advocate for the inclusion of indigenous perspectives in broader discussions about libraries and education.
1. Collaborate with other organizations, state library agencies, public libraries, educational institutions, and government agencies to leverage resources, expertise, and support.
1. Help tribal libraries bridge the digital divide by providing access to technology, digital resources, and training on digital literacy.
The Leadership Team looks forward to working with you to move these Action Items forward. Please help ensure tribal libraries receive the support and recognition they need by becoming a founding member<https://atalm.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1b5fd0b3926b2a0236f0325a1&id=4e605fc09b&e=009ae9317d> today!
With all best wishes,
Susan Feller, President & CEO, Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums
George Gottschalk, Tribal Library Council Co-director and Director of Acquisitions, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Cindy Hohl, Tribal Library Council Co-Director and Director of Policy Analysis & Operational Support, Kansas City Public Library
