View Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Andrew Curran's Presentation "The Invention of Race" at the Lensic

Watch the recording of the presentation by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Andrew S. Curran at a sold-out SAR President’s Lecture at the Lensic Performing Arts Center on April 13.

Their talk addressed the origins of anti-Black racism and colorism and its impacts worldwide. Sociocultural anthropologist Chelsi West Ohueri (University of Texas at Austin) moderated the discussion which marked the first time it had been held west of Chicago.

Gates and Curran are editors of the book Who’s Black and Why?: A Hidden Chapter from the Eighteenth-Century Inventions of Race (Harvard University Press, 2022), which was nominated for a 2023 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work, Non-Fiction.

12th Annual New Mexico Pueblo Fiber Arts Show

Saturday, May 27, 9:00 a.m. | The Poeh Cultural Center at the Pueblo of Pojoaque

78 Cities of Gold Road | Santa Fe, NM

Meet traditional Pueblo fiber artists and view demonstrations of a variety of Pueblo weaving, embroidery, spinning, knitting, crochet, basketry, and more.

“During the show you’ll notice that each artist has a different technique and style. Our vendors demonstrate their craftsmanship to the public,” said Cris Velarde, Poeh’s Cultural Arts Specialist and a member of the New Mexico Pueblo Fiber Arts Guild.

The show is presented by the New Mexico Pueblo Fiber Arts Guild, the Poeh Cultural Center, and SAR.

SAR Board Member in the Press, Native Bound-Unbound Project and StoryCorps Partnership Featured in the Santa Fe New Mexican

An article by Nathan Lederman in the April 16 Santa Fe New Mexican details the partnership between Native Bound-Unbound: Archive of Indigenous Americans Enslaved created by Dr. Estevan Rael-Gálvez, a SAR board member and former state historian of New Mexico, and StoryCorps, a nonprofit centered on preserving American stories.

Native Bound-Unbound is dedicated to collecting stories of Indigenous people impacted by slavery; the collaboration brought people to the SAR campus to have their stories recorded for preservation by StoryCorps.

Former IARC Director Named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Cynthia Chavez Lamar (San Felipe Pueblo), has been named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the category of Visual Arts. Chavez Lamar served as the IARC director from 2007 to 2014 and is now the director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

She is the first Native woman to head a Smithsonian museum. Chavez Lamar oversees the museum’s three facilities: the National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the museum’s George Gustav Heye Center in Lower Manhattan, and the Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, Maryland.
