Grounded in Clay Curator Lorraine Gala Lewis Discusses Her Selections for the Exhibition

A conversation with clay artist Lorraine Gala Lewis (Laguna, Taos, Hopi) is available on the SAR YouTube channel. For the exhibition Lorraine chose two ceramic pieces, one ladle and one mug. Both come from Mesa Verde and were made between c. 1050-1300. Listen to the conversation and learn how the contrasting black-and-white designs and distinctive shapes drew her in.laboratively curated by the Collective.

Applications for Resident Scholar Programs Due November 5

Resident scholar fellowships are awarded annually by SAR for to up to six scholars who have completed their research and who need time to prepare manuscripts or dissertations on topics important to the understanding of humankind. Resident scholars may approach their research from the perspective of anthropology or from related fields such as history and sociology. Scholars from the humanities and social sciences are encouraged to apply.

Appointments are available for the following fellowships: Katrin H. Lamon Fellowship, Mellon Foundation Fellowship in Latinx Studies, Paloheimo Foundation Fellowship, Weatherhead Fellowship, and Wenner-Gren Fellowship in Anthropology and Black Experiences.

Applications for Native American Artist Fellowships Due January 15

SAR's Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) offers three artist-in-residence fellowships annually to advance the work of established and emerging Native American artists. The fellowships support diverse creative disciplines and can include sculpture, performance, basketry, painting, printmaking, digital art, mixed media, photography, pottery, writing, and film and video. Each fellowship includes a monthly stipend, housing, studio space, a supplies allowance, full access to the IARC collections, and travel reimbursement to and from SAR.
