Good Morning Cassandra, Hope you are doing well, I just wanted to share with you that I will be presenting: We Can't Go It Alone: Community-Centered Collaborations during COVID-19 Representing a variety of cultural heritage institutions, presenters will share their experiences with partnerships and networks during the pandemic. Libraries, archives, and museums have adapted their facilities, services, and programs in response to community needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many found they didn?t have to do it alone. Building networks that foster information exchange and collaboration among museums, libraries, and other local assets and organizations can help us manage uncertainty and strengthen our capacity. Our panelists, who represent a variety of cultural heritage institutions, will share their experiences with local, state, and national partnerships and networks during the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight successful strategies that can help you lead staff and public during a crisis. I helped him identify libraries that could be eligible to receive free electricity as part of community solar projects. He may be reaching out to some of you with more info and to gauge your interest. I can't vouch for or endorse Standard Solar, but I am all for solar powered libraries and libraries getting free utilities. The idea is that while many or most libraries cannot have solar panels on their roof, and don't have land to put them on the ground, they could be part of community-wide solar farm network. If you do end up working with Mr. Partyka please keep me updated. If you have any space left in your Summer Reading plans, I just learned of a new free program from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation. There are several Ocean tie-ins: https://www.naturalhistoryfoundation.org/steam-trek . See Sharlene's email below. My name is Sharlene Argyres and I work for the NM Museum of Natural History Foundation as the Director of Operations. We have a great program called STEAM Trek Virtual Field Trips. This program enables teachers/educators/groups to apply for a FREE Virtual Field Trip on our website. They will receive a link in which they can stream one of our amazing films that we normally show in our giant screen DynaTheater. This allows many students across our state who may not otherwise be able to visit our Museum to enjoy the shows. We have raised the money to pay for these fieldtrips from our donors so there is absolutely no cost to educators/groups. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks so much. Sharlene Argyres Director of Operations New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation sargyres at naturalhistoryfoundation.org 505-841-2871 A couple of notes on the application form: * For School Name, use your Library Name * For School District, use your County * The form only allows you to select one film, but she has enough funding for you to show more than one if you would like to do a series. You'll just need to email her directly to let her know which additional films you would like. I AM A STORY collects the narratives of those who live both in and around Madras, Oregon and extends throughout the whole county. The Jefferson County Library District, Jefferson County Historical Society, KWSO radio owned and operated by The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, OR, and the Latino Community Association are inviting residents to share their stories to educate, engage, and explore the recent history and present issues that concern us today. I AM A STORY seeks to collect stories from their diverse community consisting of White, Hispanic, and Indigenous residents, and records these stories in multiple languages! Listen to their first stories here and you?ll see what a great start they?ve made! You'll see links to all the stories, which are being reorganized into categories and will be presented in the "mini-player" format you usually see in OurStoryBridge projects. Be sure to listen to Victor Pedroza?s story below, our Story of the Month, in both English and Spanish. Bravo! Igiugig, AK Seeks Three Partners to Start Their Story Projects: Qanemcimta Piniriturakut (Our Stories Make Us Strong) [https://mcusercontent.com/e6f60c122796a50a5c68ca3a2/images/be9ed545-fbfe-3e98-87d7-323ad0315639.png] Qanemcimta Pinirituakut (Our Stories Make Us Strong) seeks to replicate the Niraqutaq Qallemcinek (Igiugig Story Bridge) project in Igiugig, AK in three tribal and public libraries serving Indigenous communities, as well as other relevant cultural organizations in Alaska who are interested in creating their own story projects. Qanemcimta Pinirituakut is based on the OurStoryBridge model. Each organization will collect and share three-to-five minute, locally captured audio stories posted to a website, with stories paired with relevant photos and available in English and Native languages. While only three story projects can be supported, free consulting assistance will be available to all other organizations interested in starting their own story projects. If you are eligible for this project, further information and a link to the application can be found here. The Igiugig Tribal Council received this grant from the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums and the National Endowment for the Humanities, with OurStoryBridge serving as in-kind advisor. You can read more about it in this story by the Plattsburgh Press-Republican. In the coming months we?ll share more about our Board of Directors and exciting plans for the future. And if you happened to miss the simultaneous release of the 2nd Edition of the OurStoryBridge User Guide, be sure to check it out now! This edition proves especially useful because it reflects lessons learned through the benefit of our experience. These updates are driven by the thought-provoking questions and comments from the organizations who have or plan to create their own unique story projects. We appreciate your continued support and wanted to share that last month we had more User Guides downloaded than at any other time! As a final note, we want to remind you that OurStoryBridge got a national feature from the Our Towns Civic Foundation with this great piece in February 2022 on our mission and growth. They also surprised us with additional coverage on examples of civic activities for the youngest students through use of the OurStoryBridge Teacher?s Guide. Our knowledge about the role of indoor exposures and human health has grown exponentially in the past 50 years. Children, because of their developmental status, are uniquely susceptible to certain chemical exposures, many of which are anthropogenic. This presenation will provide a case example of a multidisciplinary approach designed to explore, identify, and address some of these exposures, particularly the ones known to have adverse health effects in order to improve child health in the Kansas City Metro Area. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, member of Laguna Pueblo, has exercised immense courage and leadership to direct her department to pursue facts on this tragic, sickening and dark chapter of US history. Her stated intentions are noble and magnanimous. She understands this to be an urgent step toward justice for Indigenous peoples and that ?the next phase of the federal government response will be to take this research to the people and find ways it can assist with healing the generational trauma it caused through racist and genocidal policy.? As I think of our work with Indigenous communities over the past 31+ years, I am moved by our tribal partners? relentless call for approaches that are family-based and intergenerational. Through this call, you all have been part of helping to create and support some of the most special and nurturing programs for family well-being. I have never felt the essence of this work more deeply than when I read this haunting and evil quote from the investigative report: Federal records indicate that the United States viewed official disruption to the Indian family unit as part of Federal Indian policy to assimilate Indian children. ?The love of home and the warm reciprocal affection existing between parents and children are among the strongest characteristics of the Indian nature.? When the Department requested the Brookings Institution to study ?the economic and social condition of American Indians,? the resulting Meriam Report found in 1928 that the main disruption to the Indian family and Tribal relations had come from the Federal Indian boarding school system: [O]n the whole government practices may be said to have operated against the development of wholesome [Indian] family life. Chief of these is the long continued policy of educating the [Indian] children in boarding schools far from their homes, taking them from their parents when small and keeping them away until parents and children become strangers to each other. The theory was once held that the problem of the [Indian] could be solved by educating the children, not to return to the reservation, but to be absorbed one by one into the white population. For those of you who are allied supporters of Indigenous peoples and our Center, please take the critical time to read the report and then please share it with others so that our nation is first aware and awoken to the truth of this country?s acts on its First Peoples, and second, newly and steadfastly committed to the restoration of Indigenous families? well-being.
