Happy Summer! This month’s newsletter will focus on how OurStoryBridge has continued its commitment to stories on race, representation, and community. Since our founding in 2020, OurStoryBridge has collected narratives on the fight for equality, racial justice, LGBTQ+ stories, and women’s empowerment, along with community struggles and strength through activism and coming together.

This is embedded within our mission to “build and assist with the deployment of our resources in communities across geographic, cultural, socioeconomic, racial, and organizational strata; and to help strengthen these communities through sharing of their stories, including preserving the stories of older generations before they are lost and encouraging younger generations to become engaged community members.”

We hope these stories shared will make clear the stress we place on the ideals of inclusion, support, justice, and finding your voice.

Finding New Voices

OurStoryBridge is continuing to expand its effort of linguistic representation! We are now sharing stories in three languages, English, Spanish, and Yup’ik, with a desire to add more. A recent project we serve as in kind advisor on, Qanemcimta Pinirituakut (Our Stories Make Us Strong), funded by the Association for Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will aid in these efforts by providing funding and assistance for three new story projects in Alaska and allow for the collected stories to be translated into Native languages. This is all part of our ongoing effort to preserve local voices. Our intention is to create new categories and courses for stories, then construct a searchable online database that can be utilized by teachers, librarians, researchers, historians, and listeners to find stories easily, whether for student lessons or just to learn. After attending the Museum Association of New York (MANY) conference in Corning, NY and presenting, “Seventh Generation Model: Collaboration Between the Adirondack History Museum and OurStoryBridge, Connecting the Past and the Present” we were pleased at the overwhemlingly positive feedback we received. Are you eligible for this grant from the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress? This grant is meant "to support projects… to produce ethnographic cultural documentation, such as of interviews with community members and audio-visual recordings of cultural activity, from the community perspective."

With this grant, The American Folklife Center will archive the collections "to preserve and showcase this rich and valuable cultural documentation, expanding its representation and inclusion of contemporary cultural expressions and traditions that may otherwise be absent from the national record." What a great way to use the OurStoryBridge methodology!
