The Enduring Nostalgia of American Girl Dolls | History | Smithsonian Magazine Personally, I'm a little too old for American Girl dolls (so sad), but daughter is not (she's 20). She has many (OK, they're probably partly mine, too). Question of curiosity - does anyone have a doll or dolls for checkout? The article mentions that there are some libraries that do. When I worked at the NHCC, we had the whole Josefina collection (doll, books, furniture, accessories) in the archives. It was donated by Dr. Nunn who had been on the advisory committee for the doll. We never loaned it out while I was there. Cassandra E. Osterloh, MLS, MA (Cherokee Nation) Pronouns: she, her, hers? The newsletter for library learning [WebJunction: The learning place for libraries] A message from WebJunction View as webpage [Crossroads: The newsletter for library learning] June 15, 2022 The Power of Learning Together WebJunction is deeply rooted in the power that comes through shared learning. By providing open access to learning opportunities, and connecting library staff from around the country (and even around the world!), we remain committed to finding ways to support the power of learning together. Whether through virtual or in-person discussions and activities, having the support of colleagues can improve motivation, introduce new perspectives, and facilitate relevant and meaningful learning. WebJunction provides learner guides for many of our webinars, and we encourage you to use these as a way to enhance and extend your learning on webinar topics. And in seeking to build more opportunities for group learning, while recognizing the value of having someone play the role of facilitator, we created a Facilitator Guide for Group Learning to introduce and support learning together. Learning as a group enriches the self-paced course experience, as participants collectively form bonds, develop a common language, share different perspectives, and support each other to create a culture of learning. In addition to the general Facilitator Guide, there are two topic-specific guides for courses available in the WebJunction Course Catalog. The facilitator guides described below can support enriched group learning experiences for the courses Supercharged Storytimes and Creating Pathways to Civil Legal Justice. Freely available through WebJunction, these resources and learning opportunities have been created to support you and your organization on your learning journey together. Learning Group Facilitation Guide Learning groups are lightly facilitated study groups for people to learn together. They provide a collaborative environment that has the potential to increase motivation as the group sets attainable goals together and connects their learning to practical application. Learners in a group share ideas and insights, answer each other?s questions, and learn from new perspectives and solutions. They form bonds as a community and reflect together on progress, which boosts confidence. WebJuction's Learning Group Facilitation Guide provides a framework for organizing, structuring, and leading a group of learners through self-paced courses on any topic. [Towards a Mindful Practice in Library Work] ________________________________ Learning Together the Supercharged Way The Supercharged Storytimes Facilitator Guide was developed in conjunction with the launch of the popular Supercharged Storytimes self-paced course. The Facilitator Guide includes Tactics and Tips for Success, Logistics and Checklists, and Module Discussion Guides that contain supplemental discussion questions and activities for each module of the Supercharged Storytimes self-paced course suitable for a group learning setting. Use this guide with youth services staff at your library, in your region, or perhaps with learners throughout your state (see Library Staff Learn Together Across Texas). The courses are valuable to the individual learner, but can also be used as core learning content for a group learning experience with peers ? from a small, self-organized group of a few co-workers at a branch to a larger, multi-system group organized as an 'official' training by a system, region or state. In addition to using the general Learning Group Facilitator Guide, WebJunction created the Civil Legal Justice Group Activities Guide to help learning groups get the most out of the courses, with relevant discussion questions, group activities, course notes and facilitator tips. Low levels in literacy can impact many aspects of daily life including the ability to find and maintain employment, navigate health care needs, and complete government forms. This webinar will explore the characteristics of adults with low literacy levels and how they differ from those of adults with learning disabilities, including how and why each of these groups approaches reading. Learn about the importance and value of developing literacy skills, as well as strategies for library staff on how to identify when someone may need literacy support, how to broach the subject with a patron, and ways to suggest materials and resources to reluctant adults who may be struggling with literacy. In fact, the past few years have pushed us, and in some cases made us scramble, to discover and experiment with new technologies and tools, to train our staff and community, and to look for new ways of doing our core activities. This presentation introduces emerging technology trends and shows how those trends are reshaping library services. Examples are provided of how to incorporate and adapt these evolving trends into libraries. Learn what trends to look for, find out the difference between a technology trend and a fad, and get ideas on how your library can respond to technologies as they emerge. Platform/Location: Moodle Queering Environmental Justice June 14, 2022 We hope you will join us on Tuesday June 14, 2022, 2pm ET for another Chat & Brew. In observance of Pride month, NNLM Region 1, UMB HSHSL DEI Committee and the MAC MLA Diversity and Inclusion Committee have come together again to offer another journal club where we will discuss Queering Environmental Justice: Unequal Environmental Health Burden on the LGBTQ+ Community. This article highlights that there is insufficient research on health disparities experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals due to environmental exposures and disasters. The authors provide linkages between health outcomes, social determinants of health and environmental exposures taking into account intersectionality within LGBTQ+ communities and provide recommendations for collecting more robust data so more comprehensive research may be done. American Journal of Public Health. 2022;112(1):79-87. doi:10.2105/ajph.2021.306406 At the end of this discussion, participants will be able to: ? Define environmental justice (EJ) ? Discuss ways libraries/librarians can contribute to environmental health & justice research The questions Where do you see libraries and/or librarians contributing to any of the recommendations proposed by the authors? What is the role of academic/medical librarians (MLA? Individual institutions? Librarians as a profession?) in addressing gaps in environmental research and data especially as it pertains to specific populations? We look forward to seeing you! Platform/Location: Webex How Implicit Bias Affects Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare August 3, 2022 Implicit bias is a natural survival instinct inherent in human beings. However, when implicit bias is not addressed in a healthcare setting, health disparities, gaps in care, and discrimination can occur in clinical settings. Algorithmic bias in healthcare still exists today, and as new technologies and digital innovations are introduced into the care continuum, leaders must acknowledge that many of the foundations the tools are built upon contain damaging bias that negatively impacts patient care. Taking deliberate steps to mitigate these biases can reduce health disparities and allow the promise of artificial intelligence to be fully realized in improving patient outcomes. He showed me around their facility and told me about all the various programs and courses they have. I also met one of their new staff members, who is a (former) librarian from Virigina. Wow! It was a great visit and quite inspirational. We thought it might be great to set up a visit to the makerspace as well as their digital media lab (which is a 5-minute walk) for library staff to see and know more about what's available, the programs and coursework they offer, and begin discussions on possible collaborations. I see this as an event that would be 10a-2p (to allow for travel), with a stop at 505 Central Food Hall (505 Central Food Hall) for lunch. This month?s newsletter will focus on how OurStoryBridge has continued its commitment to stories on race, representation, and community. Since our founding in 2020, OurStoryBridge has collected narratives on the fight for equality, racial justice, LGBTQ+ stories, and women?s empowerment, along with community struggles and strength through activism and coming together. We begin this month by sharing a story collected in the summer of 2020 from Adirondack Community. Black Lives Matter in Keene demonstrates the impact our words and stories have, whether sharing personal experiences or declaring our stance as anti-racists and allies. This is embedded within our mission to ?build and assist with the deployment of our resources in communities across geographic, cultural, socioeconomic, racial, and organizational strata; and to help strengthen these communities through sharing of their stories, including preserving the stories of older generations before they are lost and encouraging younger generations to become engaged community members.? We hope these stories shared will make clear the stress we place on the ideals of inclusion, support, justice, and finding your voice. The partnership will work to generate efforts to promote the availability of affordable broadband programs, in light of the significant role that libraries and other community anchor institutions play in promoting digital access and inclusion. ?We?ve long enjoyed working side-by-side with our libraries to support digital access opportunities, which is why I?m excited about this partnership to raise awareness of broadband funding programs,? said Chairwoman Rosenworcel. ?Internet access is essential for daily life, and especially for education, so we need to make sure everyone, everywhere, has a chance to connect. Working with IMLS will strengthen our work to spread the word so together we can serve all our communities.? ?The FCC?s E-Rate program, its Emergency Connectivity Fund, and so many other initiatives have benefited libraries and their communities, particularly the most underserved and under resourced, that it has always been needful for IMLS to work closely with FCC staff and Commissioners,? said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. ?We are honored to work with Chairwoman Rosenworcel to make sure the generous funding provided by Congress and the administration, as well as targeted universal service support, reaches many, even most, of those who historically have been unable even to apply for the funds available to them.? The FCC and IMLS have previously worked together informally to share information about their individual funding programs to support the broadband access needs of libraries and library patrons, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. And in February, the two institutions worked together to raise awareness in Tribal communities of updated rules that make it easier for Tribal libraries to access broadband funding opportunities through the FCC?s E-Rate program. A copy of the letter is available here: https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-partners-imls-address-digital-divide-tribal-lands Through this MOU, the FCC and IMLS will focus on communities where broadband access is particularly challenging, such as rural areas and Tribal lands. The joint effort will include commitments to: * Share data about participation in the FCC?s E-Rate and Emergency Connectivity Fund programs, IMLS? grant programs and availability of high-speed broadband services; * Publicize information about federal broadband funding opportunities and resources available through the Parties? respective outreach channels; * Partner on the development of broadband-related outreach materials and events; * Explore users? experiences and technical assistance needs related to federal broadband funding opportunities; * Expand and leverage the use of mobile services and other points of access; * Connect underserved communities to digital resources and services. A copy of the Memorandum of Understanding is available on the FCC website. View this email online. Exercise caution prior to clicking on links or opening attachments. Good morning, all. I few weeks ago I met with Brian Rashap at CNM's FUSE Makerspace (FUSE Makerspace | Albuquerque, NM | Maker Space, Fab Lab & Training - FUSE Makerspace). Please fill out this quick Google Form to help me determine which date might be the best for such a visit. https://forms.gle/idBFZ7BmBkKg6KXP8 Have a great day, Cassandra Cassandra E.
