It's been decided to extend the conference proposal deadline until July 15th. The full proposal call can be found here: https://nmla.wildapricot.org/Conferences Remember that this year's conference theme is focused on sustainability. Please read the call carefully to consider how your ideas may fit into this year's theme. There may also be opportunities still available to jump into some mentorship review of presentations, etc. later this summer for those whose proposals are accepted. For questions about proposal submissions and mentorship opportunities please contact: Erin Renee Wahl (575) 646-7484 ewahl at nmsu.edu Eli Guinnee (505) 476-9762 eli.guinnee at state.nm.us For questions about the conference please contact: Kate Alderete (575)737-2594 kalderete at taosgov.com From the call: In 2019, the American Library Association identified sustainability as a core value of librarianship. Sustainability has always been a part of libraries, though we do not always see our work as meeting those challenges. In a world that is living with a pandemic, threats of climate change, political unrest, and other factors that affect our lives and planet, the sustainability and resilience of libraries is increasingly important for our communities. Now NMLA wants to hear how you and your library meet the challenge of sustainability. This year, the NMLA 2022 LibrarySTRONG Annual Summit will focus on Sustainability. We know that libraries are: ? Sustainable ? Thriving ? Resilient ? Open ? Network Builders ? Green What does sustainability mean to you? What are your sustainability stories? What conversations can you facilitate to help others build more resilient and just communities? In writing your proposals, consider how you incorporate concepts and perspectives of sustainability. Maybe you have a cool new recycling program, maybe you invite elders from the community to lead programs, maybe you have reinvisioned your library spaces to be more inclusive, or changed the way you do your work daily. Sustainability is much more than just a commitment to improving and maintaining our environments. It can be found in library budgets, workflows, planning, pedagogy, community engagement, and equity initiatives, among many other things. NMLA?s 2022 annual conference will be in-person October 26-28. Calls for proposals will be accepted through July 15, 2022, for: ? Full Day and Half Day Pre-Conference Workshops, ? Presentations ? Panel discussions, ? Posters, and ? Lightning Talks (10-15 minutes). Proposals with a focus on the conference theme will receive priority consideration. ? The newsletter for library learning [WebJunction: The learning place for libraries] A message from WebJunction View as webpage [Crossroads: The newsletter for library learning] July 20, 2022 Collection Management Learning Opportunities WebJunction facilitates learning on topics both new to library work as well as those perennial facets of librarianship that ebb and flow over the years. Managing library collections?whether acquiring new materials to meet changing community needs, weeding out old books to make room for the new, or facing a book challenge?is one of those perennial library topics that has been a recent focus. Featured below, you?ll find two popular webinar recordings that can help you and your team tackle the new twists and turns to collection management. There is also a great opportunity for libraries to apply to participate in a new program to become a hub for making outdoor games and interactive stories?using your local history, community voices, and neighborhood landmarks. Book Challenges and Intellectual Freedom: Proactive Planning for Public Libraries Across the United States, there are increased reports of book challenges from community members, which have led to very public and heated discussions. As public library leaders and staff consider how to prepare for similar local challenges, being proactive about developing and sharing policies and procedures can help to create clarity and establish expectations around responses to book challenges. This preparation may also include engaging stakeholders, partners, and supporters around the value and essential need for intellectual freedom in the library. View this webinar recording with panelists who are working through these issues in their communities, to learn about the resources they have found useful, and their suggestions for getting started. More than 20 libraries will be selected starting August 15 to "engage beyond our walls." Each library will receive modest funding, live workshops with our game designers, and support to launch public events. There is a growing need for digital media in public space and ?low-tech? access for everyone. By joining this program, libraries can become a hub for making neighborhood games and outdoor stories?from escape rooms with local history to audio tours with resident voices. The authoring tool is called Hive Mechanic, and it does not require any programming experience to use; it was made by the Game Center at American University in collaboration with the DC Public Library. Urban, tribal and rural libraries are all welcome. Learn more in an upcoming information session and apply by August 15. The Public Libraries Survey examines key indicators of public library use, financial health, staffing, and resources. Explore the FY 2020 data and documentation. Last month the agency released a preview of this data in a two-page infographic ?How Public Libraries Adapted to Serve Their Communities at the Start of the COVID-19 Pandemic,? which highlights strategies public libraries used to ensure patrons had access to library services as the pandemic forced closures in communities around the nation beginning in March 2020. Each year since 1988, the survey has provided a national census of America?s public libraries. The data are collected from approximately 9,000 public library systems comprised of over 17,000 individual main libraries, library branches, and bookmobiles in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. The project gives authority and voice to the Pueblo Pottery Collective, a group of over 60 individual members of 21 tribal communities who selected and wrote about artistically or culturally distinctive pots from two significant Pueblo pottery collections??the Indian Arts Research Center of the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Santa Fe and the Vilcek Foundation of New York. Organized by SAR and the Vilcek Foundation, Grounded in Clay debuts July 31, 2022, on unceded Tewa Indian lands at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe before traveling nationally in 2023. The exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the creation of SAR??s Indian Arts Research Center??s pottery collection in 1922. As SAR??s first traveling exhibition, it also marks the institution??s multi-year efforts to bridge the cultural needs and knowledge of Native communities with its public education mission. A Lesson in Community Curation from Grounded in Clay Guest post by Emily Santhanam Consider when and where you??ve seen Pueblo pottery in a museum. How was it displayed? Who wrote the label? What did it tell you about the Pueblo people who made, held, or cherished the pot? About lineage, loss, love? Chances are it didn??t tell you much. Throughout the history of museum institutions, Pueblo pottery has been exhibited and interpreted from an academic ??expert??s?? lens, based in Western archaeological, anthropological, or art historical thought. Frequently removed from the communities who created them, Pueblo pots have been seen as ethnographic remnants of past cultures, or anomalies of fine art ?C little more. But beginning July 31, 2022, change is coming. . . . That basic understanding is the focus of this unit. Once you have this foundational knowledge, you will know better how to plan and market your program series in ways that foster understanding. [Pushing the limits environmental literacy 3] Pushing the Limits: Environmental Literacy Unit 3 Librarians have the great privilege to build collections and the responsibility to make sure collections meet the community?s needs and expectations. Curating collections takes time, effort, and intention. But the result is a library that meets patron needs and reflects community diversity. I cannot believe this is the last week of July. Last week several people mentioned that their local schools are beginning August 1. I cannot fathom starting so early. That being said, summer programs are coming to an end., and I hope all your programs were successful, fruitful, and fun. There is not much this week, however, I did want to let you know my schedule for the next few weeks in case you are need of anything from me. Wednesday, July 27: I will be unavailable 10a-12p as I will be attending the funeral/memorial service of BCSO Lt. Fred Beers, one of the men killed in the helicopter crash last week. Fred was a co-coach with my husband and I on our youth track and cross-country team (Albuquerque Athletics Track). We've known Fred and his family for many years. He was such a calm and reserved man, with a great smile, who was wonderful with the kids. He loved running long distances, running many marathons and qualifying a few times for the Boston Marathon. Thursday, July 28-Sunday, July 31: Brian and I will be visiting our daughter in California. If you need anything from Southern California, let me know! Wednesday, August 3-Saturday, August 6: I will be attending the Tri-Conference (MPLA/PNLA/MLA) in Missoula, Montana. I will be checking emails and phone messages while I'm there. So, please let me know if you need anything, and I will help (maybe a tad delayed). Tuesday, August 9-Thursday, August 11: I will be on jury duty. It may be fewer days. I won't know until that week. As always, let me know if you need anything. Have a beautiful day! Cassandra Cassandra E. Osterloh, MLS, MA (Cherokee Nation) Pronouns: she, her, hers?
