Arts Councils exist in more than 5,000 communities across the nation, but rarely on reservation lands. Typical Arts Council activities include increasing visibility and opportunities for local artists, supporting cultural tourism and economic development initiatives, and transforming communities into vibrant arts and culture destinations. Arts Councils may receive financial support from state, regional arts councils, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

To ensure that Native communities have equal access to funding and other opportunities received by mainstream communities, ATALM is working on a pilot project to help test the feasibility of creating Native Arts and Culture Councils (NACC). The work is supported by a two-year Ford Foundation grant awarded to ATALM. Six Native communities will be selected through an application process. Over a two-year period, the six pilot communities will receive training, professional consultations, resources, and funding to support community engagement.
