 President Joseph R. Biden nominated Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD, of Los Angeles, California, as chair of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) during National Arts and Humanities Month. She has served on the National Council on the Arts since 2013, when she was appointed by President Obama, and is a tenured Institute Professor in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA) at Arizona State University, where she also holds an appointment in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions. She will be the nation’s first African American and Mexican American to be appointed as NEA chair.

Beginning in 2019, the NEA’s Office of Accessibility, in collaboration with the NEA’s Design program, set out to gain a better understanding of how designers in the U.S. are responding to the needs of people with disabilities and their inclusion in the design process as designers, leaders, and decision-makers. The NEA commissioned a field scan specifically looking at disability as it relates to public space (including architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and other public space design) and disability and the human body and mind (including fashion design, industrial design, and graphic design and computer science).

The long-form field scan, researched by disability design educator and activist Joshua Halstead, yielded deep and thoughtful findings which have been distilled into this summary report. It’s with mixed emotions that we bid farewell to Katherine Bray-Simons who recently left the National Endowment for the Arts. She will soon be joining the Trust for Public Land as associate director of policy and systems change. And applications are now being accepted for the next round of SAT grants! The National Park Service has announced availability of $25 million in Historic Preservation Fund grants for the program. Applications are due December 14.
