The Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) has announced the Outstanding in Their Field Leadership Institute. This is a wonderful growth opportunity for a group of library folks that may often feel left out of the professional discussion. The Institute is for library workers who are currently working in rural and/or small library from various backgrounds and ethnicities. Applications are encouraged from folks who may not have a Masters in Library and Information Science and maybe not even a college degree. If you love serving your community through librarianship, and your library has very limited funds for professional development or attendance at conferences; if you're a library lifer with or without a library degree and you want to up your library game - this Institute is for you. All participant travel, materials, and instructional expenses (worth approximately $8000) are covered by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). If you're interested in learning more about the Institute or know someone who might be a good fit for this opportunity, please visit the ARSL Outstanding in Their Field website at ??https://arsloutstanding.org/ Applications are due February 24th, 2021. A conflicting legislative meeting has come up that I need to attend (usually noon is safe, but around the legislative session all bets are off). If you plan to attend, please use this time to consider three questions: 1. If you tend to save your GO Bond rather than spend it right away, what are some of the reasons? 2. What is one thing you wish every legislator knew about the funding or spending of GO Bonds for Libraries? 3. What are some ways we can better communicate these things? I look forward to talking about this next week, and again I apologies for such short notice on the postponement. Best, Eli P.S. Join us today at noon for an important discussion with Eli Guinee, the State Librarian, about spending GO Bonds, and what the legislature considers when determining GO Bond amounts. We will be gathering feedback from you on several key questions such as: * What do you wish the state library, the legislature, and the general public knew about GO Bond spending? * How do you decide when to spend the money and what to spend it on? * Are the current amounts enough to support your library? The Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) defines small communities as those with a legal service area population of 25,000 or less and rural communities as those more than, or equal to, five miles from an urbanized area. Selected libraries will develop facilitation skills through online training, talk with community members (virtually or in-person) about local needs, and undertake a project that benefits their community. Grant funds may cover a range of expenses, from hotspot purchases to personal protective equipment to staff time to undertake community engagement work. --- Hannah Arata (she/her/hers) Communications Associate, Public Programs Office ALAAmericanLibraryAssociation 225 N Michigan Ave | Suite 1300 Chicago, IL 60601 programminglibrarian.org - - - - - - - - - - - - Eli Guinnee New Mexico State Librarian 1209 Camino Carlos Rey, Santa Fe, NM 87507 Cell (505) 629-9153 www.nmstatelibrary.org www.newmexicoculture.org - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
