The Legislative Bulletin is a summary of library legislation during the 2020 Legislature, provided by the Legislation Committee of the New Mexico Library Association.

The 2020 Legislative session starts on Tuesday, January 21st. This will be a 30-day session, ending at noon on February 20th. February 5th is the last day for new bills to be introduced. Legislation may be pre-filed beginning December 16, 2019.

NMLA Legislative Day will be Friday, January 31. Please ask library supporters, including your local board members and friends groups to save the date and plan to be there.

ACTION ITEM:  We need librarians and library supporters to attend the Legislative Finance Committee session at 1:00 pm the afternoon of Thursday, December 12th to show support for library programs of the New Mexico State Library within the Department of Cultural Affairs budget.  Our presence supports the inclusion of robust funding for the 2020 Library General Obligation Bond Issue and the proposed substantial increase in funds for the state grants-in-aid program for public and tribal libraries. We are informed that the Committee will not be taking public comments supporting the many museums, historic sites and institutions within the Department. This is still the chance to be seen and recognized by committee members.
