As explained in the attached Hitchhiker article written last January, the NMRSI is intended to help public libraries in New Mexico create a Statewide Union Catalog. In order to achieve this goal, a multi-year initiative is necessary. I described the project as consisting of two tiers. In Tier One, the State Library will be helping public libraries that wish to participate to implement an open source software solution for their Integrated Library Management System. The Resource Sharing Team at the State Library has investigated and tested Koha (www.koha.org) and is preparing to launch a pilot project that will demonstrate how open source software can help certain public libraries in New Mexico. Four public libraries have volunteered to participate in the pilot. They are: The Carnegie Public Library in Las Vegas; the Pojoaque Public Library at the Pueblo of Pojoaque; the Taos Public Library in Taos; and the Vista Grande Public Library in El Dorado (Santa Fe). Representatives of these four libraries will gather at the State Library this week for an initial "kickoff" meeting to discuss the implementation of a shared system using Koha. This is an exciting time for these libraries, and they will be working together to decide how their resource sharing consortium develops. The State Library's Resource Sharing Team and staff are poised to help the libraries by providing support and expertise in several areas. Some folks have referred to the NMRSI as the "Koha Project." This is somewhat misleading, and I want to remind everyone following the initiative that Koha represents only one component of the broader effort. There are several things that will have to happen in order to develop a fully functional Union Catalog for New Mexico's public libraries. One of these is leveraging technology to allow libraries to connect their Integrated Library Management Systems to one another using broadband connections, and another is for New Mexico's public libraries to work together, in a spirit of cooperation and collaboration, to ensure that their unique collections and information resources are accessible to any New Mexico library patron with the desire to discover and use them for whatever purpose, be it research, personal or professional development, recreation, or lifelong learning. Many libraries are satisfied with their current systems, and these libraries, should they decide to participate in the NMRSI, will not be asked to change systems or vendors. It is up to the library to decide what kind of system best meets their individual needs. Participation in the NMRSI by these libraries is completely voluntary and would represent Tier Two of the initiative. The ultimate goal of the NMRSI is to create a Common Library Platform that will serve the needs of all New Mexicans who wish use the valuable resources found in our public libraries. The challenges are many, but utilizing technology and the creativity of our library leaders will help to make this goal a reality. The State Library and its Resource Sharing Team want to help New Mexico's public libraries and their patrons and believes a Statewide Union Catalog will enhance the experience of our libraries' users. Please join us in our efforts, and let us know if you have any questions or concerns about the NMRSI.
