From Lori.Thornton at state.nm.us Fri Nov 9 08:53:54 2018 From: Lori.Thornton at state.nm.us (Thornton, Lori, DCA) Date: Fri, 9 Nov 2018 15:53:54 +0000 Subject: [Nmgovdocs] update on gov doc happenings Message-ID: Hello everyone! I know it's been a long time ... and during that time many of us have moved on and many new people have come aboard. We welcome you all to the gov docs community of New Mexico. The State Library has been without a government documents librarian since September of 2015. We are about to rectify that situation. The position has been posted and we should be hiring very soon. We are also about to say farewell to a long standing member of our community. Monica Villaire-Garcia will be retiring the end of December and we will all miss her dedication and expertise very much. Please join us in wishing her all the best. We will be filling her position in the new year. I would also like to introduce our two new catalogers whose time is devoted to government documents. Margaret VanDyk and Joseph Angelo joined us last June and they have both been cataloging our gov docs collections here at the State Library with determination since then. We are very happy to have them here with us. For those of us who are Federal Depository libraries, the big task ahead of us is the statewide adoption of the new eXchange. As soon as Monica Dorame (UNM), David Irvin (NMSU), and I have implemented the new system for our shared regional, we will develop a state plan for maintaining the comprehensive collection in New Mexico and our usage of eXchange to accomplish that task. We will also organize an eXchange training session so that everyone knows how to use the new system for our needs and offers. We will also be making some changes to the shared regional arrangement in the near future. We'll keep you posted as we move forward with both of these tasks. Summer is our tentative target for an in-person gov docs depository meeting, which we'll hold here at the State Library. We plan to make our new gov docs people feel welcome, get to know everyone better, talk about state depository matters, talk about Federal depository matters, do some training, and hopefully have a good time together as well. We'll send the date out well in advance so that as many of you as possible can participate. Once my tenure as the Chair of the Federal Depository Library Council ends next May, I also intend to hit the road and visit as many of you as possible. I hope to see soon! This research project will explore who facilitates government information collections and perceptions of their future roles. It is being conducted by Dominique Hallett at Arkansas State University-Jonesboro and should take between 20 minutes to an hour (depending on responses to open-ended questions) to complete. The survey will close by January 15th. Please pass this link along to anyone who works with documents - librarians, paraprofessionals, vendors, GPO employees. We want to reach as many Documents people as we possibly can.
